The internet is one of the fastest growing technologies ever seen. In 2002,around nine percent of people worldwide were using the internet. Ten years later, in 2012, thirty-three percent of the worlds population was using the internet, just over two billion people. Compared to forty-six minutes a day in 2002, people now spend an average of four hours on the internet every day. The internet's widespread use and the large role it now plays in everyday life means that nowadays, it has a much greater effect on people. Youth specifically are affected greatly by the internet as they spend large amounts of their time on the internet, much more than their adult counterparts. To successfully analyze these effects, three causes of those effects will be looked at. These causes are new teaching methods in schools, cyberbullying, and Clearly, youth worldwide are greatly affected by the internet.
New Teaching Methods
First, the internet is creating new ways for young students to learn online. In one study was found that eighty-one percent of teenagers studied reported having one or more personal media devices, eighty-seven percent used the Internet, and fifty-one percent reported going online every day(Considine, 2009, 473). This data portrays current youth as extremely engaged in internet communications technology and gives convincing evidence that their use of telecommunications is far greater than other generations. Due to this, things related to the internet, and the effective use of it are now needed to capture teens attention. Where ever you live and whatever grade you teach, technology has made it into the lives of teachers and students. Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. As teachers, we need to embrace technology and try and stay ahead of our students if possible.

I find it disconcerting that teens live much of their lives in a virtual society. “Growing Up Online”, barely scratches the surface of the breadth and depth to which technology permeates modern society. Teens continue to struggle for independence and self-identification, but with less face-to-face interaction than in the past. Many view e-communication as reaching out to the masses.

One of the most widely used technologies is the Internet, or also known as the World Wide Web. “In August 1981 about 200 computers hosted Web servers. By July 1998 there were over 36 million Web servers, that are hosts to approximately 150 million people” (Strauss). The Internet proves to be very beneficial to education, since students have unlimited access to millions of websites with tons of information. There are only so many newspapers, journals and magazines that you can find in libraries or subscribe to. Therefore, the Internet offers an unlimited pile of information that students can always have. Moreover, students are enriched with the most current information in any subject, along with regular updates. Students are able to use the Internet anytime of day, as long as they have a computer at hand. The research process will not have to end when the school day is over (Wissick, 82).
Many children have access to the internet and are able to search up anything on Google. As with any type of media, there are positive effects and negative effects. Some of the negative effects of the internet for children are that ,since, children and adolescents are more or less technologically savvy than their parents, they are able to search about just about anything and and talk to just about anyone on the internet, this can lead to some very dangerous situations. According to the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, “89% of adolescents report using a computer, 61% report “surfing the net,” and 14% report seeing something that they do not want their parents to know about.” (Villani, 2001) 14% of adolescents reported seeing something that they did not want their parents to know about, this shows how unsupervised the internet is and shows how the internet can lead adolescents to become secretive and , maybe, even violent. The recent outbreak in the growth of social media, smart phones, tablets, and any other internet allowing device does in fact impact the youth school wise and at home. According to statistics CNN has gathered (Chelsea Clinton and James P. Steyer, is the internet hurting children, cnn.com) at 5 years old more than 50% of kids go on the computer and or tablets. Starting to use the internet at such a young age slows down the child’s learning ability, they should be practicing to sound out words and learn to write letters, but because of the internet that makes it a lot harder than how it should be. My mother, Gina Steiman, who is a Board Certified Adult Health Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health and a Board Certified Advanced Practice Public Health Nurse, who works as a school nurse and at a college based urgent care health center noticed that :
Technology affects everyone! Whether positive or negative, we are all affected, how it manifests itself into problems for youth will be studied and debated for years. Balancing technology throughout the educational process and keeping with current trends and uses of technology will affect everyone. Technology has transformed our youth’s daily and social lives. How do we measure the effects of technology on our ability to socialize or have a successful social life? Socializing is not just talking face to face, it’s our ability to interact, learn, and create original thought. None of this would be possible without the readily available Internet access that we often take for granted. The Internet has proven not only useful for entertainment purposes, but has also dramatically changed the educational approach, for both students and educators, and the way knowledge is being obtained.
