Should parents let their children play football? Football is the epitome of blue-collar America. It is known as America’s favorite game. Some parents believe that youth football is not an organize sport that young athletes should participate. Some reasons given for not allowing youth to play football are that football players are at a high risk for concussions, their injuries will have long – lasting effects, and then you have the “helicopter parents”, who try to shield their children from any problems. Through the game of football young children will learn life skills through the discipline of the game. The structure of the game fosters important life skills, such as leadership, goal-setting, and time management skills. (Griffis, 2015) Enduring the rules of football and comply with the instructions given by the coaches teaches them discipline. The competitive aspect of the game helps the players learn how to deal with disappointment, develop resilience, practice good sportsmanship and learn how to grow from constructive criticism. For most parents who are against the sport, this is the majority of the reason. One reason football is said to be too dangerous is because of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, otherwise known as CTE. It is a deadly brain disease that can develop from the repetitive hits and tackles young football players experience. (Osborne, 2014) There are more positive health benefits than negative health benefits that come from playing any organized sport, such as football. Research has shown that physical movement can affect the brain’s physiology by increasing cerebral capillary growth, blood flow, oxygenation, production of neurotrophins, growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus, neurotransmitter levels, development of nerve connections, density of neural network, and brain tissue volume. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.

The problem is that many people think that it could be stopped by not allowing kids to play at all. Whether basketball, soccer, baseball, or softball; furthermore, involves players, parents, referees, and a ball; additionally, if it is played as a game, in a tournament, is practiced, it will require a coach. It teaches discipline, how to be a team player, how to interact with others and is a good source of physical activity. In specific, football utilizes all of these aspects of sports and it’s a great source of teaching self-restraint and perseverance. Some may say that football is a violent sport or it’s not beneficial in any way, but in reality it gives a person the basic tools needed not only for playing the game, but also how you interact with people in society.

The game of football is an essential determining factor that turns boys into men, and every boy at some point should learn to play the game. Not for the game itself, but for the things it teaches about working hard to achieve a goal and how to find another way to reach that goal if failure ensues the first try. The fundamentals of football were drilled into me as a three year old, along with tremendous off season workouts and being able to coach little league football and passing down my knowledge to others, are the key factors that lead to my breakout season and being one of the best players on the team.
