Choice I must admit, when I read the question, “What is your favorite word and why”? , I had to reflect for quite a while. So many words flashed through my mind; but one word stood out – choice. Over the course of this past year, I have had to make some very serious choices. I knew that the decisions that I had to make would impact my life forever. One choice that I made has made a huge impact on who I am today. I am mentally and physically stronger and more determined to reach my future goals; and it is all because of a choice that I made. Unquestionably, last year at this time I was not the person I am today. I suffered a severe concussion during football practice at the beginning of my junior year. Life as I knew it, changed in
a blink of an eye. My brain injury was so severe that I could not attend my public high school and my parents made the decision to enroll me in a virtual online school offered through our public school system. My Mom read all my school work to me and many days I would only finish one subject. I had double vision, loss of coordination, memory problems, and loss of many of my cognitive skills. I was referred to the UAB Concussion Clinic and my doctors laid out a recovery protocol. My doctor could not give me any clear answers to what my future might be, but I was given a “choice” – I could go home and feel sorry for myself or I could go home and work as hard as I could for the best outcome. I made the choice that I would do whatever it took to recover from my brain injury; and I would return to my school and graduate with my class. Without a doubt, I was angry and depressed at the beginning of my recovery. Before my concussion, I had perfect attendance all through middle school and high school and a 4.11 GPA. I enjoyed school, church, and community activities. Furthermore, I was afraid that my dream of attending college and receiving any scholarships were gone; but the realization that I had a choice in my recovery gave me the incentive to work hard. Each day I would make goals for myself and when I accomplished those goals, I would strive even harder. My days consisted of physical and eye therapy, with school work squeezed in between. As my memory improved, my school work got easier. I was able to eventually catch up with all my classes and I did return to school. I was not able to take The National Merit Scholarship test or several ACT tests and my GPA and class rank dropped, but I am doing very well this year. I feel that I am almost totally recovered and I was inducted into The National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. The National Society of High Scholars recently awarded me a medal for academics and perseverance. The ceremony was held in Atlanta in December 2017. This medal is very important to me because I know how much I had to overcome to receive it. In conclusion, the freedom to choose is one of the most aspects of our lives. We each pay a price for all our decisions and our indecisions, but we have the individual opportunity to determine for ourselves when the price is too high to ignore. It is by the choices that we make – the large, the small, the important and the seemingly trivial that determine who we are and the quality of our lives. We each become the sum of our choices. I made a choice and I had the courage to act on that choice. I am excited about attending UAH and achieving my educational goals. If I am accepted into the Honors College, I will use that opportunity to the best of my ability.
While Catherine Breillat’s “Sleeping Beauty” does stay true to the original Brother’s Grimm tale in its archetype, she does stray from the original version in many ways in order to convey a message. In comparison to her film “Bluebeard”, “Sleeping Beauty” was much more explicit, with graphic sexual scenes. Additionally, this tale is different in that the main character is not the dainty frail princess we usually see in classic fairytales, but a tomboy who wants to referred to as “Vladmir” and has sexual encounters with another woman. Breillat contrasts the lesbian sex scene where Anastasia is laughing and enjoying herself with her having sex with Peter where she cries throughout it and puts her face down in a pillow after it is done.
What is island life? what do you think of island life? My opinion of island life is a a place were you do what you want to do and with you you want to do it with. The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding and movie Castaway (2000) is directed by Robert Zeneckis. He similarly explores what happens to mankind when left stranded on an island without civilisation, rules and order. In Lord of the Flies a group of boys are left to themselves after experiencing a plane crash, leaving them alone on an island. Golding shows that evil desires, the basis of human nature is revealed when left to oneself. In Castaway it different compared to Lord Of The Flies because in castaway there is only on person stuck on the island while golding has a dozen.Composer achieves their unique perspectives by exploring civilisation, characterisation and through the theme ‘survival’.
Many people, all throughout history, have aspired to create a perfect life for themselves. However, this dream is not often very easily available. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel about the decay of society, the blindness of love, and the pointless pursuit of the now non-existent American dream. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows the United States not in the glittering golden light that many claimed, but rather cast in a dark gloomy haze, polluted by crime, corruption, and moral decay. Fitzgerald also strikes down the notion that foolish love is harmless. Additionally, the author illustrates that the American dream is a now no-longer existent, and foolish pursuit. Many thought the roaring twenties were the height of American society, but they were actually just the beginning of a downward spiral.
In class, we have read a couple of Flannery O’ Connor’s short stories which include A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People, and Revelations. After reading these stories, I noticed that Flannery O’ Connor changes the story but in a sense keeps the same main characters in every story. The main things that change between these characters are how they decide to handle a situation and their names; the things that do not change are often the outlook that they have on the world. I noticed the grandma from A Good Man is Hard to Find and Ruby Turpin from Revelations follow the criteria that I listed above. Throughout this paper, I am going to discuss the similarities and differences between the grandma and Ruby Turpin.
The Forum in Pompeii was the centre of the commercial and political life. In Pompeii, the forum was the centre of the political life because it contains the voting hall and the municipal offices, as well as market place including the vegetable market and the Macellum. The forum was also a very important place for religions as most of the temples such as the temple of Jupiter and Mars were built there. The people in Pompeii not only worshipped Greek gods, they also worship gods from foreign cults such as the cult of Isis and the cult of Sabaziums and also past emperor as one of their gods, they follow ritual such as the bull sacrifice depicts in the Temple of Genius Austusti at Pompeii. Priest hood is very important in the political life of Romans because they will become Public priest or prestress one day such as Maria and Emachia. The Forum was the centre of the political, social and economic life in Pompeii as their temples, market place and government offices were built there .
The experiment described below was aimed at investigating bystander apathy and try and relate to it to diffusion of responsibility. The bystander effect has been greatly examined and investigated leading to several conclusions, with diffusion of responsibility being one of the most prevalent. The theory holds that a person is more willing to assist another person in distress when he is alone. When a person is comes across a person in distress and there are other people around, he is less willing to help. This occurrence of this behavior has been theorized to stem from diffusion of responsibility. This theory suggests that as the number of people increases, the responsible to help in a situation reduces. As a matter of fact, the greater the number of people present, the more an individual is likely to assume that the victim is getting help, or help is on the way.
William Golding , the author of The Lord of the flies believes that evil resides in all human beings. The Lord of the Flies begins softly but nearing the end everything turns upside down. But would the world be the same way it is today without societal structure and rules? Only through societal structure, rules and order will humans be thought morality/principal and proper behaviour. The Lord of the Flies demonstrates what society would look like/resort to without any rules or guidance for man to follow. Others might believe this is true because of natural evil and actions done by individuals, a comparison through savagery and civilization, and certain truths in the world that are evil.
In America, it is becoming more difficult to achieve the American Dream. The American Dream is based on the idea that people can move higher up on the social scale, as long as they work hard work to accomplish their goal. The American Dream is also based on the belief that the social class you’re born into, is not the social class you have to stay in. In other words, everyone can move up in their lifetime if they work hard. However this is not true today, and people are not moving positively up the social class ladder. It has become a chain reaction of people with a college education vs. people without a college education. People with a college degree, or who have parents that have received a college degree, are significantly more likely to be in the upper class in America today, giving them an unfair advantage.
In broad terms, business model can be defined as usually plan implemented of how a firm will generate revenue, expenses operating strategies, corporate structure, product offering and target customers (Chaffey, 2011, p. 706). Many changes for the good and some were bad but, there were some learning experiences that help make me a better person. The events in my life, was dealing with the Birth and The Death of my first daughter.
From saying the first word “mama” to be able to communicate like this is an amazing nature of human beings. Facts are babies mind are not fully developed that they can’t remember saying their first word. I am not saying I do remember, actually from many of the things I want in life one of it is remembering the moment I spoke my first word. I really wish I could remember each and every part of my childhood. Since that never happened my first memory of literacy was when I was four years old, at that time I know how to speak and understand Amharic which is my first language though I have no clue how I got used to it. Since Amharic was spoken mostly throughout my country and at home, it wasn’t hard for me to understand what is said and interact with most people; actually for a four year old I was good at it. I am really not sure if I am called a multilingual but after Amharic my second language was English and

5 years ago I sat in Muir Middle School with my friends and classmates talking about television shows we watched the night before and plans for that weekend. I didn 't have a job, and my only responsibility was taking care of myself and doing my school work. I never thought that my life could be dramatically changed in a short period of 5 years. 5 years full of events and lessons. I am now 18 years old and my personality, hobbies and appearance are all very different now.
I was able to overcome many problems and challenge myself in different aspects. At the very beginning of the year, I was very sensitive and having a bad experience meant a bad life to me. Later on, I started to realize what I am doing in school, and why I am here… I understood that life without ups and downs means you're died.
