Name: Laura Harvey Student ID: 2262 3922 Unit Code: BHS00130-2017-2 The following reflective writing will discuss my involvement and experience with civil society as a volunteer for a non-for-profit community-based organisation called You Have a Friend (YHAF) (You Have a Friend, 2016). YHAF comprises of active citizens and community change agents that provide different forms of support to individuals and families who are experiencing any form of homelessness (You Have a Friend, 2016). YHAF has validated my belief that communities and community development are a more sustainable option and can better meet the immediate need of the people, more than the bureaucratic structure would (Ife, 2016, p. 21). Like Ife’s social justice framework, the underpinning principles of the notion of need, empowerment and equity help individuals and families within the community to reach their highest capacity (Ife, 2016, p. 55). Community development has the potential to eliminate the barriers which cause disadvantage, marginalization, poverty and providing access to resources and services to assist with their situation (Richard, 2016). Through the community development activity hosted by YHAF, they were able to address the social injustices associated with homelessness, and to be an empowering tool for the community to assist in working towards a more sustainable and equitable society.
