Sookan changed in many ways throughout the book Year of Impossible Goodbyes when she was faced with the following situations: When the Japanese got defeated and the Russians came to take over, when she learned about her family’s past and saw Grandfather’s feet, and lastly when she was told that she needed to escape North Korea. When the Japanese surrendered and the Russians came Sookan at first plus other Koreans felt set free and happy that the Russians were there to protect them. They were so desperate for freedom that they listened to anything the Russians said. Once Sookan and her family started doing their daily jobs under the supervision of the Russians they soon realized that they were being controlled the same way the Japanese did to them. “The Russians are so clever,’ she told us. ‘We have been starved and treated like slaves for so long that we can be won over with a few kind gestures. People don't realize they’re being brainwashed.” (Choi 105-106). This situation and quote has changed Sookan because she now realizes there will never be freedom in North Korea. …show more content…

Also, when she saw Grandfather's feet and how he had no toenails she realized what it was like to be tortured. “I knew he had no fingernails on his right hand…but no toenails!...Sadness washed over me like a big ocean tide. My fingers trembled as I went over each toe with lemon oil. My head started to throb as all the horrible stories I had heard of Japanese cruelty went rushing through my mind.” (44).
