Yahoo! Fantasy Sports is one of the leading fantasy sports sites, but its users are slowly starting to use other websites like ESPN. ESPN passed Yahoo! in terms of number of users in fantasy football, the most popular fantasy sport, back in 2012. ESPN had 6.27 million users compared to Yahoo’s user base of 6.23 million at that time. If Yahoo! does not take a proactive approach these numbers will likely become farther apart. As of July 2015, it has been estimated that 57 million people play fantasy sports in United States and Canada. With soccer gaining popularity in the U.S. and being the number one sport worldwide including these in the fantasy sports lineup will increase members. The top fantasy sites do not currently have MLS as a fantasy sport. The next solution to gain members is to create incentives for returning leagues and participants. Offering them more access to live up-to-date stats as well as podcasts from fantasy experts will increase their loyalty season after season. The consulting team’s third solution for Yahoo! Fantasy Sports is to increase its customer base within the daily fantasy sports action. Yahoo! started in this market July 2015 to compete with Draftkings and FanDuel. There are five states currently where a daily fantasy sport betting is illegal, including: Arizona, Montana, Louisiana, Iowa, and Washington. We recommend that Yahoo! work with local law makers and the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) to legalize this law. This would widen Yahoo!’s customer base if the fans in these five states were allowed to legally plan daily fantasy sports. John Culhane reports that DraftKings employee Ethan Haskell has taken unfair advantage of the information he receives as an employee. As an employee of DraftKings, Haskell is justly forbidden from participating in DraftKings fantasy contests. However, there is nothing stopping him from entering contests in FanDuel, which functions under a system very similar to DraftKings. On September 27th, Haskell revealed that he had insider information, and that he was the “only one with this data.” With this data, Haskell outscored over 220,000 people in a contest that week and brought home $350,000. Culhane reports that many at DraftKings make more money on FanDuel contests than from their own salary. This is absolute corruption. Hundreds of thousands of people are losing their money to people who should not be allowed to participate in the contests. This calls for more regulation and the banning of employees from playing in their competitor’s contests. Many believe that those who work for one of the companies do not have an unfair unadvantage. Rather, they are just very knowledgeable in fantasy football and, after working with the game constantly, know the smartest way to play the game. This logic, however, is wrong. The evidence of Haskell beating out over 220,000 participants cannot be a coincidence. By abolishing the salary cap, the Department of Justice ruling has had a substantial impact on the competitive balance of the NFL. Because the salary cap was removed, over the past 10 years teams from big markets, or who have deep-pocketed owners, have been spending money rampantly. Small market teams have been marginalized to a point of having very little chance to win, as they cannot afford to spend freely on talent, as they do not have the income potential to make money. This progression is similar to what we have seen over the years in professional soccer, specifically in the UEFA champion’s league and Spain’s. In the UEFA Champions League, 12 teams have combined to win 48 out of the 58 championships, or 82.76% of championships. There has been such a lack of Competitive Balance in revenue splitting and salary cap free soccer that even among the best teams in the world there is great disparity. An even more extreme example can be found in Spain’s La Liga, where the top 2 teams have won 65.85% of the league’s 82 championships and the top 5 teams have won 93.9% of the league’s championships. This lack of competitive balance is certainly caused by a lack of salary cap, as the top 2 teams spend up to €190,000,000 per year on players while lower level teams spend up to €14,000,000 per year on players. According to Forbes, 33 million people play fantasy football each year. This includes an estimated 6.4 million women. They also found that Americans spend an estimated $800 million annually on all fantasy sports media products. This really is an American phenomenon.

To the best of my knowledge, gambling on fantasy sports remains illegal in the state of Washington alongside five other states in the United States. Before I go further into my claim I would like to give my definition of gambling as well as my definition of fantasy sports. Gambling, in my opinion, consist of a game of chance.
