You have most likely seen how big companies treat the environment around them. You’ve seen those fast food cups on the sides of roads and other forms of pollution. My perspective on this has been reinforced, the relationship between people and the environment is rough. Many don’t care what happens to the nature around them, especially the big, money hungry companies. In these two stories, “He-y Come on Ou-t” by Shinichi Hoshi and “Lee Sherman and the Toxic Louisiana Bayou” by Dr. Arlie Hochshchild, both of these two texts show how careless people treat their environment. In “Lee Sherman and the Toxic Louisiana Bayou” by Dr. Arlie Hochschild, this sets the perfect example of a terrible company in charge of a nuclear reactor. The story starts off with Sherman talking about his experience working at a nuclear reactor before it had a meltdown, he notes that the company didn’t regard company safety most of the time “I’d bend down and open the faucet. Under the pressure of compressed air, the toxins would spurt out 20 to 30 feet into the marsh. Sherman waited until the buggy was drained of illegal toxic waste.” [15] In secret, the company had hired Sherman to do their dirty work after he had been exposed to excessive toxic chemicals. His job was to dump nuclear waste into the marsh before it solidified. His secret job would have to be done twice a day. The fact that they would hire an employee to do their dirty work, such as polluting the bayou, is very illegal, but they paid Sherman to keep his mouth shut. “Task Force met to discuss the surrounding waterways, to describe them as “impaired,” and to consider issuing a seafood advisory, warning people to limit their consumption of local fish.” [22] The excessive waste dumping contaminated the water, putting many livelihoods out of business and intoxicating the local seafood.
