When a person thinks of a hospital, he or she usually thinks of doctors and nurses working together to heal and save lives. When in reality, it is so much more than that. In order to be able to diagnose and treat patients, the exceptional physicians and other health care workers must go through a sizable process so that they can truly do their best. Here, come in the different departments a hospital needs. Whether it’s the emergency care department, the intensive care unit, or the oncology department, they all play some type of role and work together in helping the patients. One that stands out for me because it helps a lot is the X-Ray CT Department because it is a part of the Diagnostic Imaging Techniques Department. The different mechanisms in the Diagnostic Imaging Techniques such as X-Rays, computed topography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) help narrow the causes of an injury or illness and ensure that the diagnosis is accurate. The imaging tools allow the doctors to see inside the body of the patient and get a variety of “pictures” of the bones, cartilage, organs, nerves, muscles, and tendons and have become mainstays for diagnosing medical diseases. It is a modern imaging tool that integrates computer technology with X-rays in order to produce a more detailed, cross-sectional image of the body. The scan allows the doctor to see the size, position, and shape of the structures that are deep inside the body. The patient must lie motionless as possible on the table that slides into the center of the CT scanner. The process is absolutely painless as the X-ray tube rotates slowly around the patient while taking many pictures from all directions. As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
In the radiology profession first you must write the patient’s file. This includes information about insurance, medical history, what the required x-ray is for and where it is going to be taken on the body. Writing in this way is similar to writing a small research paper. You must do research on the patients and there history and what insurance they have. Writing the report is important because the information must be accurate so the patient can be helped as much as possible. If the information about medical history is incorrect it can cause a huge problem for the patient. For example, if the patient is claustrophobic they would need to get an open room x-ray where the patient isn’t in an enclosed tube so they don’t have a panic attack and potentially injure themselves and others. After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree, I continued to work as a staff MRI technologist. Even though I loved what I did and had a passion helping people, the lack of diversity within radiology and its limited room for growth bothered me. I decided to look into furthering my career and found an interest in Health Information Technology. Upon researching many different schools through the country offering an online graduate Health Information Technology program, the University of Michigan in Dearborn stood out to me. CTscans stands for “Computed Tomography”. It is a way of looking inside your body using a special camera. It is an advanced scanning x-ray and computer system that makes detailed pictures of horizontal cross-sections of the body, or the part of the body that is x-rayed. A CT scan is a diagnostic test that combines the use of x-ray with computer technology. A series of x-beams from many different angles are used to get these cross-sectional images of the patient’s body. In a computer, these pictures are assembled into a 3-dimentianal picture that can display organs, tissues, bones, and any such thing. It can even show ducts, blood vessels and tumors. One of the advantages of CT is that it clearly shows soft tissue structures (such as brain), as well as dense tissue structure (such as bone). The pictures of a Ctscanner are a lot more detailed than the pictures of a regular X-ray machine. It can make pictures of areas protected or surrounded by bones, which a regular X-ray machine can not. Because of this, a CT scanner is said to be 100 times as affective and clever as an ordinary X-ray, and can therefore diagnose some diseases a lot earlier and quicker. It is recent technology that has made it possible to accurately scan objects into a computer in three dimensions, even though the machines and ideas were developed in the 1970s. In the 70s doctors started to use this new type of machine that could give detailed pictures of organs that the older type of x-ray, machine could not give.

The endless hours, the dark nights, and some obnoxiously early mornings all spent in the hospital is what I love. It will become my new home full of eventful days consisting of helping those in need.

X-rays are mainly known of in the medical industry as they provide a convenient and painless procedure which produces images from the inside of the human body. X-rays, which are an electromagnetic wave of high energy and very short wavelength are able to produce images from inside the body as the x-rays pass through materials that are opaque to light.
Images of human anatomy have been around for more than 500 years now. From the sketches created by Leonardo da Vinci, to the modern day Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan, images have played a great role in medicine. Evolution in medical imaging brought together people from various disciplines such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, a collaboration which has further contributed to healthcare as a whole. Modern day imaging improves medical workflows by facilitating a non-invasive insight into human body, accurate and timely diagnostics, and persistence of an analysis.
In today’s society, it’s much easier to detect and diagnose an illness because of a great medical detection technology: Computed tomography scanning or CT scans. It’s a scanning technology which uses X-ray computed tomography to generate images of internal organs in human body. Because of its accuracy, more and more people choose to use CT scans. According to Bernier and his team’s research (2015), in the USA, “the number of CT scans increased from 2 million in 1980 to about 70 million in 2007” (p116) and this number is still growing.
