What’s Wrong with Being Confident Finishing up her makeup, she glances at herself in the mirror. She smiles as she sees the masterpiece she just made, her makeup is perfect today. Today she wore some lipstick, just for the heck of it. She takes one last glance, before she walks out in the world. She feels confident, every step is with pride. She knows it will be a good day. One less thing to worry about. She feels unstoppable. All humans groom before stepping out into society, it is part of the social norm. Makeup is part of the ritual. Also according to Nancy “women wearing makeup looked more attractive, likeable, competent and trustworthy to our viewers than those who went without it”. And also agreeing with Natasha that “Makeup is a powerful but understudied tool”. Both New York times articles mention how these rituals give women some amounts of confidence, and the confidence women get from the makeup is what is attractive (Ectoff). Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells new York times how she feels about makeup and women who are against it. “I really respect Alicia Keys’s choice not to wear makeup because she felt it was a mask. And she feels now that she’s more truly herself”( Safronova). Nancy concludes from this that “makeup is what you make it of it. It is a choice”. Some women use makeup daily. Such women take putting on makeup as an internal force they have achieved. For such women putting on makeup is manipulating how you look to others. They tend to make themselves more attractive and that process and end lead to a empowering feeling. There seems to be two types of women who wear makeup. The first being women who put on makeup in order to hide from the world are unstable emotionally and on the edge. The second type of women who wear makeup are women who put on makeup for the sole reason to highlight their good traits. These type of women are more social and extroverted due to the confidence makeup gives them. This can also be seen as picking out cloth which make your features look good. As part of our culture, while growing up boys and girls are expected to learn the basic skills to fulfill the "roles of their gender." For boys this includes learning all of the the routine maintenance on a car, to work out and be stronger then the girls, and are usually expected to be better with electronics. While at the same time girls are steered towards learning how to cook, clean, and look pretty. All of the female roles require a lot of practice and trial and error before they can be mastered, but the hardest and most time consuming skill to be learned still remains applying make-up.
