A little girl named Nakyla comes home from school. The first thing she does is change her clothes. She has to wear a uniform so she likes to put on regular clothes to start her homework. First, she makes herself a snack. Then, she sets her desk up with her homework that needs to be completed. She has to write in a journal every day. She makes it a priority to finish her homework before doing anything else. Without being told, she has made her own writing ritual. The two most important aspects of a writing ritual are environment and time.
To begin with, writers’ need to control their environment. One major concern to a writer is noise. Simply minimizing the sound in an environment he or she can focus easier. The sound of the television or
music can disrupt creativity. Instead of writing, he or she will be focused on the program that is currently on or their favorite song. Equally important is climate control in the environment he or she has chosen to write. For example, working in conditions without air conditioning would be unacceptable, due to the heat in Florida. A cool, dry place to work would be sufficient. Next, gathering the essential supplies and having them out where he or she can reach them would be extremely helpful. This approach will allow to the writer to continue writing and not have to keep getting up for things that he or she might need such as extra paper, pencils, erasers, and charger for phone and computer. Finally, find an environment to work in that allows snacks. Keeping nourished will help the ideas flowing. A simple snack like chips, apple slices, celery, or yogurt are some quick ideas. Secondly, writers’ need to utilize their time. Setting a time to write can be crucial to completing assignments on time. For instance, a student waited until the last minute to complete their homework. He or she went to log into their homework and found that the internet was not working. This would be a major problem, he or she would have to find a different location to complete the assignment or take a failing grade. Next, limiting time on the computer will ease a stressed out writer. Saving work and turning the computer off will allow the writer time to regroup and come up with new ideas. Brainstorming without the computer is more productive than just blankly staring at the computer screen getting nothing accomplished. Also, knowing when to take a break is a key element to becoming a successful writer. Writing when frustrated will show in work completed. Taking a walk or shower should help to ease a stressed writers mind. In conclusion, being a writer is not as easy as it looks. Just knowing that a project has a time limit can give someone a panic attack. People poor their hearts into their work and are very sensitive about the grade earned. This can cause them to break down from the pressure. There are different ways to control the environment where work is completed and utilize the time that has been allowed.
Furthermore to make the Writer’s Workshop successful the students must have intensive and daily independent writing time. During that time the children will work on tasks they learned in the mini-lesson. Some of the writing time should be silent thinking and writing time, while the other time can be quiet writing times when the students can talk in soft voices. Students should always know they are never finish writing in writing workshop, they either work on a draft, revise pieces, or start a new writing (Rog
Writing is a type of art because it requires you to think and be creative in the way you want it to be. I have a diary that I wrote almost everyday. They help me think about my day and sometimes turn my bad day into a good day. I write whatever comes into my head at that moment, and reflect on my day. Writing make me think deeper to what happen and help me turn my negative thought to positive. Writing is a very powerful tool. When I write, I have the power to change the story. I am the author of my own story so I can be as creative as I want.
Poverty and homelessness are often, intertwined with the idea of gross mentality. illness and innate evil. In urban areas all across the United States, just like that of Seattle. in Sherman Alexie’s New Yorker piece, What You Pawn I Will Redeem, the downtrodden. are stereotyped as vicious addicts who would rob a child of its last penny if it meant a bottle of whiskey.
Writing 150 has been a truly enjoyable course for me. While I have always loved language and literature, this class gave me a fresh, new perspective on what it means to be a writer. From the very first class, I was redefining what writing means to me and how I could use it in my life, even if my career path isn’t centered around writing. As the semester comes to a close, I want to share with you which paper was my favorite from this course, how my identity as a writer has changed, and how I will approach future writing tasks with a new and improved writing process.
Signifying is a way people (usually in a weak position) use coded language to fool a person (usually in a position of power) who doesn’t understand the play on words. The origin of signifying goes back to the African tale of the Signifying Monkey. The Signifying Monkey is a trickster figure of Yoruba mythology; also called Esu-Elegbara in Nigeria and Legaba among the Fon in Dahomey. Signifying uses one word, preserves its original meaning, but puts another oppositional layer of meaning over it. The word is both literal and figurative. Here is how Henry Louis Gates, Jr. interprets the Signifying Monkey tales:
“Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.
Literature has long been an important part of human life. We express our feelings with ink and paper; we spill out our souls on dried wood pulp. Writing has been a form of release and enjoyment since the beginning of written language. You can tell a story, make yourself a hero. You can live out all your fantasies!
Do I listen to my teachers and follow their rules or do I totally disregard everything that is being shoved down my throat by the government and come up with my own writing process? Alright, it’s not that tough of a decision. Of course I’m going to do what works best for me and come up with my own way. After all, many successful authors do things in order to write well that teachers wouldn’t even think of teaching. In Susan Wyche’s article (included in Essays on Writing), She states that, “Famous writers have been known to do a lot of crazy things to help them write” and then goes on to list famous authors and their rituals before writing (pg 52). Now, I think that what some authors do, like lying on coffins, is a bit excessive and I’m not too sure how that helps them write but I do think that everyone is different and requires different settings and stimuli to help the creative process. For me, I need music that I know well. If I am listening to a song that I know every beat to, I can write through the entire song without taking a break. This idea is one of many that teachers have always tried to suppress saying that we can’t have distractions and not allowing us to listen to music in class even when we are doing individualized
First, environmental self-regulation refers to how writers adapt and organize their environment to minimize distractions and make an effective place to write. Examples of environmental self-regulation are finding a quiet place to write and having books available to refer to during the writing process. Studies have shown that writers who do al...

While being enrolled in my English 112 DL07 composition class, I have faced some challenging situations. For instance, writing a rhetorical analysis is not as straightforward as one would imagine. There are several strategic techniques that need to be implied; there is also planning, note-taking, forethought, and prewriting. On the other hand, I overcame this tough situation by taking the appropriate amount of time to get my thoughts and ideas together to create a rough draft. I believe I do fully understand what is academically expected of me for this term. This may sound like sarcasm, but it is the truth, I enjoy writing, and analyzing essays. Writing is a passion and stress reliever to me there is nothing better than writing an essay. Achieving
It is a sense of escapism from the standard nine to five occupation or school day. However, lines spoken by an actors’ voice aren’t just words and sounds put together to pass time, but there are real people behind the keyboard of every script. These words crafted on paper symbolize the lives we live and the smallest details exude the emotions we go through as humans. A piece of dialogue isn’t just placed with a thunderstorm in the background to randomly change the look of a setting, but it’s a metaphor for devastation and heartbreak. It is a way to visualize how one may feel inside and can’t always be expressed orally. Writing is a captivating experience because I have the power to express the inexpressible and the ability to enrich the textures and colors of our
When you submerge into a ritual bath, you are appreciating a beginning to open yourself up to soul. The writing class session I observed is a packaged program in which the students have been participating in for 5 months. They all know the routine of the reading and writing workshop and understand “the Daily 5.” The student’s movements are purposeful and there is little time wasted in transitions. The books used by students become more complicated as the students ability strengthens. At the end of the workshop, Mrs. Rammond praised those students who used their time efficiently during “the Daily 5.” She spoke directly to the students who wrote in their journals and asked them to share their entries. The students learned some new trivia about insects, practiced writing and then had some time for art.
