Is child behavior better or worse than it was years ago? In my life I have experienced and seen behavioral issues among children at points. Many people often do not understand how to discipline their child, give no attention to them, avoid traumatic events that occur in their life, or never restrict the negative influence of media. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that parents are to blame for all bad behavioral problems that their children have. However, they do have a part to play in this issue, but so does the environment around them. Personally, I have seen the many effects media, lack of attention, and traumatic events can have on a child. I currently am living with my mom and her boyfriend for almost two years now and my mom’s …show more content…
Before this decade, media did not play a huge role in people’s lives, but now it does because technology has progressed and we have become very tech savvy. Adolescents look to media for advice and look up to role models that can influence them in many ways. Even just looking at videos of violent or negative behavior can change a child’s perspective on how they should act. As stated, "Violence in media causes desensitization to violence. It may facilitate violent acts. Violence may be contagious by observational learning and social agreement" (Luskin). They mimic things that they see in the media because they see it as something cool and “trendy”. It is said in the writing, "Television has the potential to generate both positive and negative effects, and many studies have looked at the impact of television on society, particularly on children and adolescents (1,2). An individual child’s developmental level is a critical factor in determining whether the medium will have positive or negative effects. Not all television programs are bad, but data showing the negative effects of exposure to violence, inappropriate sexuality and offensive language are convincing (3)" (Johnson). Television influences adolescents in a way that they see images and videos that may influence a certain type of behavior. With media being very different and more …show more content…

Childhood Disruptive Behaviors Early Childhood Children at this stage (aged 4 to 8) understand the world by perceiving it, being influenced by it, and acting on it. In turn, the surrounding world shapes the child. This demonstrates the role of nurture within the child’s environment, as well as its role in developing behavior patterns. Longitudinal studies have demonstrated that behavior patterns and personality are established during the early formative years. Research suggests that, when children come from unhealthy backgrounds, such as dysfunctional, abusive homes, they are much less likely to develop adequately physically, academically, and emotionally.
According to John Davidson's essay Menace to Society, "three-quarters of Americans surveyed [are] convinced that movies, television and music spur young people to violence." While public opinion is strong, the results of research are divided on the effects of media violence on the youth in this country. Davidson wrote that most experts agree that some correlation between media violence and actual violent acts exists, yet the results are contradictory and researchers quibble about how the effects are to be measured (271). Moreover, Davidson is not convinced that the media is the sole problem of violence, or even a primary problem. He points out that other factors, such as "poverty, the easy accessibility of guns, domestic abuse, [and] social instability" may have a greater impact on a child becoming violent than the influence of the media (277). Even though other forces may be stronger, media violence does have some adverse effects on the members of society. If senseless violence on television and in movies had no effect, it would not be such a hotly debated topic. What type of effects and whom they affect are the most argued aspects of the discussion.
Trauma is an overwhelming experience that causes injury to a person's psychological state of mind. Complex trauma, on the other hand, is a term used by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). In which an increased emphasis is placed on the impact of multiple traumatizing events that occur during child development stages. As well as an increase in sensitivity of those traumas involving close personal relationships, such as caregivers and siblings (Forkey 3). Children exposed to complex trauma suffer from detrimental short-term and long-term effects on every aspect of their child development. These effects significantly impact their overall "quality of life," specifically affecting areas of cognitive functioning, neurobiological

Developmental Trauma Disorder (DTD) was a proposed by Van der Kolk and D’Andrea (2010). The premise of DTD is based on research data of individuals involved in several research studies. According to Van der Kolk and D’Andrea (2010), DTD is the result of living in a fear-based environment which includes, poor treatment by primary caregivers, instability, and neglect. This type of inadequate treatment is often hidden, meaning it is may not be visible on the surface. Neglectful caregiver-infant relationships perpetuate DTD. These interactions relay the message to the infant or child that the world is not safe, is threatening, and is unreliable. This lack of emotional safety is often as damaging as lack of physical safety (Van der Kolk & d’Andrea,
The effect of the media on young children is especially salient. Young children often learn how to act and behave from what they observe at home, from the adults and older peers they come in contact with, and from what they see on television.
In a research analysis of Media and Violence, studies show that “Although the typical effect size for exposure to violent media is relatively small ... this ‘small effect’ translates into significant consequences for society as a whole” (“Media and Violence: An Analysis of Current Research”, 2015). This states violent behaviors can come from the smallest variables, or clips from videos, which is why it is important for parents to control what their kids see, read, and watch, and limit the amount of violence exposure.

Aggression has been linked to significant repercussions in academic and social functioning (Farmer et al., 2011); and studies on youth have concluded that physical aggression was a predicting factor which preceded risky behaviors which developed later on in the adolescents that were studied. Those dicey inclinations included early onset of sexual activity and tendency to unsafe sexual behaviors, as well as substance abuse that incorporated tobacco, alcohol and drugs (Deater-Decard, 2008). This is an indication of how important is to prevent and intervene before aggression can lead to other dangerous and risky behaviors. To Deater-Decard (2008) it is essential that we continue to understand and improve our capability to decrease aggression, and to minimize the impact on our society.
With children viewing more and more media, it is important to understand the impact it is having on them. Heather L Kirkorian, postdoctoral research associate at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Ellen A. Wartella, executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California-Riverdale, and Daniel R. Anderson, professor at the university of Massachusetts-Amherst, examined children under two years of age in their study, Media and Young Children’s Learning. A conclusion was made that educational programming can have positive effects on children academically while violent programming can have negative effects on children academically (Kirkorian et al,
Television shows and movies have a great influence on youths' behaviors and
Lastly, it is no doubt that media violence can give an impact to their personality and mental health. This is because, their feeling and mental health will be affected. Overexposure to violence can lead the children to believe that world is dangerous and unsafe place. They may begin to overestimate that they will be a victim of violence. They also will feel stress and anxiety about what will happened to them. Teenagers who exposed to high level of violence tend to have higher levels of anger and depressions. For example, they are reported in having higher rates of wanting to hurt or kill themselves. As a conclusion, I hope that I have explained to you the negative effects of media violence on youth. Exposure to media violence will make youth to have violence and aggressive behaviour. It also can make children to have difficult time to differentiate between reality and fantasy and also their feeling and mental health also will be affected. In order to reduce the effect of media violence to youth, parents and family need to limit their time in spending time with television and game. So, I strongly urge you to carefully consider my argument for yourself and for the world.
The regularity and asperity of media violence has dramatically increased over the years. The Media exists in almost every aspect of people’s lives and exposure to violence in the media is becoming a large concern. People are exposed violent acts in the media everyday between video games, movies, and television. Parents are distressed over the fact tha...
The first effect of mass media on teenagers is violence. Aggressive behavior is the first example of violence in the media. Aldridge argues that, teens who watch violent movies may behave in an aggressive way towards others for example bullying and fighting in school. This is important because there are high risks of teenage developing into aggressive behavior that may last into adulthood if they are not being supervised on what they see on TV (2010). Fearful of the world may also occur for those who watch violence television programs. According to children and television violence, teens that are being over exposed to violent on television may worry about becoming a target of violence. The relevance of this idea is that teenagers will more likely grow up thinking that the world is a scary place and that something bad will happen to them (2008). Imitative behavior is another major effect of seeing violence in the media. According to Weldon, two teens from Johnstown, Colorado, killed a 7 year old girl by beating her to death. The teens claimed that they were imitating moves from a video game called “Mortal Combat.” This is an example case which shows that violence in the video game may lead to an imitating behavior (2007).
