Throughout the course of World war II there would a production of hundreds of thousands of tanks manufactured for the conflict for the U.S. alone. This was the main striking force for an armored unit during World War II. These tracked behemoths were designed to be used as the ultimate armored weapon, and king of the modern battlefield. The crews who controlled these tanks came from every part of America. To many soldiers during the second World War these Americans were known as the Armored Calvary or Tankmen, but they referred to themselves simply as tankers. Being a tanker meant the adaptation of harsh battlefield conditions and a series of imperfect machines. In America, tank development following World War I had been severely hindered due …show more content…
Either it be in support of infantry units or operating in independent formations. The main U.S. medium tank to see combat in World war II was the M4 Sherman, between 1942 and 1946 American factories produced over 49,000 of them. A fully armed Sherman tank carried 97 rounds of either highly explosive or armored piercing artillery shells, and was protected by 2-and a half inches of frontal armor. A 30 caliber mounted machine gun was used for close combat situations. Depending on the model, it had a top speed of 24-30 miles per hours. In the European theater of World War II their armored vehicles were no match for the enemy’s tanks. Both allied tankers and German counterparts coined the term “fire cracker” for the American Sherman because of its instability. Throughout the campaign the late model German mark IV with its high velocity 75 millimeter gun and an even more powerful Panther and Tiger tanks outclassed most models of the Sherman tank in sheer fire power. Despite the dangers the brave American tankers battled on, however in many areas in Europe and the Pacific thousands of brave tankers met their end in their armored graves due to the sheer power of newly improved German
The men of the 714th Tank Battalion served their country in its greatest time of need. A key element of the 12th Armored Division, the 714th fought in harsh conditions against a desperate German enemy for five consecutive months, driving the Nazi Armies from France and back into the German heartland.
War is what keeps a nation from dying, it is the backbone of a country. This is the shown throughout the course of World War I, also known as “the war to end all wars.” World War I started in the summer of 1914. Archduke Francis Ferdinand, from the Austro – Hungarian Empire was visiting Bosnia. He was shot, along with his wife, Sofia, by a young man from the Black Hand, Gavrillo Princip. What were the three main factors that started World War I? There were three main underlying causes that started World War I: greed, nationalism, and militarism.
After America was brought into the Second World War, The 82nd Infantry Division was reactivated back into the United States Army under the command of General Omar N. Bradley. With this division being reactivated meant there was many untrained and unexperienced men in this infantry division. Most of the soldiers volunteered after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. All of the paratroopers were volunteers. Bradley taught these men how to use a gun, conditioned these men to run for long periods of time, and made all these men muscularly stronger. By August 1942 the 82nd...
In the summer of 1944, General George S. Patton and his 3rd Army successfully broke through heavy German Forces resistance from the Normandy invasion. German forces were in total disarray by the end of August 1944. Patton pleaded with his boss, General Omar Bradley, that if 3rd U.S. Army could be allocated as little as 400,000 gallons of fuel, he could be inside Germany in two days. Time was crucial before the inevitable reaction by the Germans to shore up their defense, preventing Patton from advancing. General Bradley refused Patton's request for more fuel; Unfortunately, General Patton advanced to Germany. Morale ran high throughout Patton’s Army, and there was no sign of heavy resistance before the German border. Consequently, by early September, the 3rd U.S Army had ground to a virtual halt along the flooded Moselle River. In places, Patton's tanks and vehicles ran out of fuel on the battlefield and their swift momentum outran their supply lines (Fugate, 1999). Lack of logistics allowed the German forces to take advantage of Patton’s Army and initiate one of the largest tank battles of World War II, the Battle of Arracourt.
Army. Unfortunately fratricide was a reoccurring issue during this battle as well. Due to the lack of training and knowledge of aircraft identification, American AAA gunners and infantryman shot down several friendly planes in the heat of this battle, including several easily identifiable P-38 fighter planes. Those mistakes could have easily been avoided had the soldiers of that time been instructed of proper identification of both friendly and enemy targets. The primary focus of the battle of Kasserine was that of a technical aspect, and in no form tactical. Aside from poor aircraft identification, there was also minimal training in combining air support with maneuvering ground troops on the battle field. This supreme poverty of training in turn led to yet more fratricide and loss of friendly life. A positive lesson learned was that the most effective means of Air Defense during the battle was the use of mounting two and four .50-caliber M2 machine guns on half-tracks. One aspect that proved to be ineffective was the 37mm guns, which failed to stop or destroy the German tanks. Aware of this fact, the U.S. Army began the development of armor piercing shells and anti-tank guns. The U.S. Army was mindful of the shortcomings during the battle of Kasserine Pass and only weeks after refined and revamped its tactics and strategies in air support, amour fighting, and artillery. Due to weapon
World War 1 was a deadly battle with millions dead, but do you ever wonder what caused world war 2? There are many causes for world war 2, but the item that caused an impact on the war the Treaty of Versailles. World war 1 started on August 1914 and ended on November 1918 it lasted for 4 years and 3 months. World War 2 lasted for 6 years with even more people dead and injured. So how did the versailles treaty help cause world war 2. The treaty of versailles punished Germany too harshly in four key ways: Territorial losses, showing how Germany is weak, and vulnerable, making the Germans pay, and the germans also wanted to destroy the treaty.
In 1937, Tucker had the idea of developing a combat vehicle. Two years later, he moved his family back to Michigan to develop new automotive products. Tucker received an opportunity from the Dutch government. The government wanted a combat vehicle that would work in the muddy Dutch land. He began to design an armored combat car, nicknamed “Tucker Tiger.” When the Germans invaded Holland, Tucker had not completed the vehicle. By then, the Dutch lost interest, so he offered it to the U.S. government. The combat car could go up to 115 mph, which was too fast for the government. They had already committed to other combat cars, and refused the car. However, the gun turret on the car took a place in the U.S. Navy and was soon used in many of the ships.

...ilities of the tanks being penetrated were slim. Also there was an addition of an anti-craft gun which made it even more powerful and unstoppable (Slayton 103).

Tanks of WWII Andrew Logan Middle Township High School US History Wilson 4/4/14 WWII was an era of learning and innovation, despite the ominous history behind it. Many new technologies were developed and led to many things never seen before; Jets made their first debut, experimentation with rockets started, nuclear science reached nuclear levels, peering radar, and huge metal boxes on wheels. These metal boxes evolved so much during WWII. Tanks have had such an impact on the war, and the same is true the other way around. Each nation had a slightly different take on tanks, each evolving throughout the way, along with the way tanks were used also varied among nations, and changed significantly throughout the war.
On July 28, 1914, the Great War, otherwise known as World War I, began. This war had a total death count of 20 million. The weapons used in this war brought out a terrible new way of war. There were many of weapons used in WW1 and many new advances in weapons, including a whole new bunch of deadly vehicles. Poison gas, submarines, and airplanes are just a few of these new advances in weaponry for war.
American tanks were much quicker than other tanks, but with the downside of lighter armor. The reason American tanks were so cheap and were not of high quality was because they were mass produced and were made with thinner armor than Germany’s late war tanks. America also had to transport these tanks over an ocean to Europe, so the tanks had to be light. The Americans had produced forty eight thousand Sherman tanks during the war, making it the most produced tank during that time (Fleming 16). Two things that had helped the Americans during the war were the P-47 Thunder Bolt and the Bazooka. The P-47 Thunder Bolt was a plane that was used to break up Germany armor concentrations, clearing the way for the division’s advance. The Bazooka could
The Thirty Years War was a series of conflicts, not-knowingly involving most European countries from 1618 to 1648. The war, which was fought mainly in Germany, was started when Bohemian Protestants furiously attacked the Holy Roman Emperor in terms to impose a restriction on their religious and civil liberties. By understanding the Thirty Years War, you will notice the notable religious, political and social changes. The changes paved the religious and political maps of Europe. Not only did this war affect the religious and political demographic, it caused populations to perish and lose large amounts of their goods. What was known as a religious battle, turned out to be a political feud in competition of which state has the greater power affecting men, women, soldiers and civilians. “[The bohemians] had no idea that their violent deed would set off a chain reaction of armed conflict that would last thirty years and later be called Europe’s “first world war” of the modern era.” When the war ended, the lands were defiled and over 5 million people were killed.
during world war one there was several successful technologies used, but there was also several that failed. technology was a key in world war one and without it the soldiers involved in the war would of been unsuccessful in battle. There was not much technology available when world war one took place but the technology they had was extremely important. Technology that made the greatest significance was rifles, barbed wire, machine guns, aircrafts and many more devices yet it did come with unsuccessful technologies as well which did harm the troops in battle.
