World War One World War I was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. It involved many of the world's great powers, with the central powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire against the allied powers of France, Russia, Great Britain, and later the United States. The war was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914, leading to a chain of events that ended in a declaration of war. One of the things World War I was known to do was promote the widespread use of new military technologies and tactics, such as machine guns, tanks, and trench and chemical warfare. The Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the war in 1919, caused countries to be faced with heavy reparations, especially on Germany, and planted the seeds for future conflicts. The war also led to the rise of new beliefs, such as communism and fascism, that set the stage for World War II. Interviewer: Mr. Ross, I’m honored to be speaking with you today. My first question for you is, "What was it like with the start of trench warfare?" John Campbell Ross: Trench warfare is brutal and overwhelming, with constant danger and chaos surrounding us at every moment. John Campbell Ross: The hardest part was trying to anticipate and protect against the unpredictable effects of new and unknown chemical weapons. Interviewer: How did the conditions in the trenches affect your physical health and well-being? John Campbell Ross: The conditions were horrible, with mud, lots of water, and other constant things taking a toll on our bodies. Interviewer: Can you describe a particularly challenging moment from your time during the war?
