University of Portland has a reputable pre-veterinary program that I am interested in studying in. Since I was young my dream was to work with animals of all kinds. Fascinated with the Animal Planet, I told my parents someday I would be like my hero Steve Irwin. I knew right away when I pretended to “ fix the owie better” on my plush dog that my career goal would be to work with animals. When I grew up I began to research wildlife conservation organizations, such as the World Wildlife Fund, and found myself investigating the horde conditions wild animals endure because of humans. For example, elephant ivory is highly valuable in most countries, especially China. Poachers slaughter masses and masses of elephants for ivory and sell it to China, an approved ivory trading state. A single tusk is worth up to $6,000. Another example is the Taiji dolphins. The Cove is a documentary explaining the mass killings of dolphins of the town of Taiji. Thousands of dolphins a year are slaughtered or sold to be used …show more content…
What could I do? This year I joined a school club called SEA. SEA members are passionate about being more eco-conscious, so it was natural for me to propose the Dolphin Project based off of Ric O’barry’s, the director of The Cove, work. What this project will include efforts to make more people aware of the situation in Taiji. Since, we live in a tourist town many people come from around the world, so it will be easier to spread the information. Also, we have a sister city in Japan, so I thought it would be beneficial to them to know the effects of eating dolphin meat and to extend our influence to the country that is effected the most. There will, also, be a video made to reach out globally through the internet because in this day and age the internet is widely used. We will donate $300 that we raised by our small town bake sales and other events,
The Sea Shepherds are group of volunteers who try to protect the sea animals, and capture criminals who kill the animals without permits. Their website has many purposes, one dedicate to collect donations from the reader. Furthermore, they want to protect the ocean wildlife. The website audience includes people who want to protect the ocean, and they want to save the sea animals which will likely be extinct. They offer the audience a chance to donate, volunteer, and stay up to date with ongoing issues involving marine life. This website is outstanding because the sea shepherds host a successful website that effectively reaches out to the audience through appealing to the reader's emotions, logic, and credibility.
But it takes a while for culture to catch up” (Cronin). His film did have an effect on America and Americans that countries no longer buy dolphins from Taiji, the once largest dolphin distributor in the world to help lower the number of dolphins slaughtered each year (Psihoyos). Psihoyos and the team had a hard time creating a reform in Japan because the government censored the movie for so many years that barely recently it was allowed to be seen. Psihoyos has made progress and gained supporters through his activist, non-profit group, Oceanic Preservation Society which he is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of (“Home”). The non-profit focuses on saving endangered ocean wildlife, including the dolphin therefore, Psihoyos is continuing to muckrake for dolphins until the number of slaughtered dolphins each year is close to
One of The Cove main arguments is highlighting how difficult it is to see what really is happening with the dolphins, and how it is blocked from the public. We the viewers are instinctively drawn into this idea with the first line of the documentary being “I want to tell you, we tried to do the story legally”. We feel as if we are going undercover and exposing the truth. Juxtaposition is used with a woman eating dolphin at a Taiji theme park as she watches a dolphin show while Ric O’Barry narrates: “Here in Taiji, you can go to the Whale Museum and watch the dolphin show and eat a dolphin at the same time. They sell dolphin and whale meat right in the dolphinarium. It's the captivity industry that keeps this slaughter going by rewarding the fishermen for their bad behaviour.” Psihoyos intent is to shock the audience and persuade them to question Taiji methods. Blackfish pushes it agenda using archival footage with John Crowe a former orca capturer. Along with archival footage shown of the babies being captured while the rest of the family “communicate back and forth”. “You understand then what you’re doing. I lost it. I started crying…it’s like kidnapping a little kid away from its mother…it’s the worst thing I can think of.” These examples show how documentary filmmakers are very deliberate in how they of live and archival footage showcases how these video are deliberately chosen to further their
Every year, hundreds of killer whales are hunted, killed, or placed in captivity. Approximately forty-five killer whales, commonly known as orcas, are currently in confinement. Orcas have been captured and placed in cement walls since 1961, however capturing orcas for exhibition purposes began in 1965. Somewhere along the way, someone, somewhere thought it would be okay to take these harmless creatures out of their natural habitat and put them into a tank to amuse people. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people converge to establishments that house orcas. Several forms of media focus on campaigning the idea that paying money to see orcas preform is beneficial.
Notice to Landlords he purpose of this page is to educate landlords who have tentants that have disabilities and require a service animal. • I want you to define what a service dog is and how it pertains to housing. • I want a clear example of lawsuits a landlord can face by rejecting an applicatation with a service dog • Talk about no extra rent/deposits/fees • Talk about the importance of dogs good behavior and that it cannot be disruptive, excessive barking, making a mess etc Instead of learning the hard way and getting in trouble with the law for discrimination, learn about the different kinds of assistance animals and what conditions must exist before you are required to allow them into your rental property. What is reasonable accommodation?
For those who haven't seen or heard of the documentary, The Cove focuses on a small seaside whaling town in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, called Taiji. The cast includes professional dolphin trainer Richard O’Barry, along with other activists working to expose the town’s annual ‘tradition’ of dolphin capturing. While some dolphins are sold to marine parks and dolphinariums, the majority are slaughtered and sold for meat. The Cove unpacks the origins of the trade, and Japan’s influence on the fishing industry attempting to stop the so-called inhumane events. [“…and, they don’t have any dolphins.
First of all I love the ocean as much as I love the ocean animals and it hurts my hurts, my heart to see animals get hurt because of the pollution. This past summer I went to L.A California and I had the opportunity to go to Santa Monica and the beaches there are not really dirty but the oceans in peru and over there by south africa are full of plastic. Not necessary plastic you can see with your own eyes but plastic that has eroded for so long they are particles. I would really like to see all the oceans clean. Now this topic I am doing is being worked on as we speak. The oceans being clean won’t just help the world but the whole economy as well. The U.S would benefit so much from this project.
When most people think of companion animals, they have a specific species and bred in mind. Take dogs for example, any dog lover will admit to having a special place in their heart for a certain breed. Most breeders are counting on this. This mindset, however, does more harm than good to the companion animal population. That being said, here are some reasons you should start looking through shelters and rescue organizations to adopt your next family member!
People nowadays commonly have access to social media, so if there are advertisements on almost all the sources such as TVs, Facebook, Youtube, Twits that alreadyter, Tumbler, etc, then about 2,925,249,355 people, 40.4 percent of global population, will learn about the issue (World Internet Stats). Since there are campaigns that already exist, this proposal can draw more people into the campaigns for saving dolphins. If a cornucopia of people from different countries is aware of dolphin hunting and eating from the advertisements they’ve seen on social media, then they will join campaigns. Similar to the campaign of saving whales, people will march in their hometowns with signs against dolphin hunting and eating. Consequently, the government will then be required to support the elimination of dolphin hunting in order to satisfy the public.
An action to bolster empathy of all the people on earth to save animals would be a decent idea to have everyone’s support. This is not a one person’s or a single organization’s work but all humankind’s empathic duty toward our neighbor animals. At the end of the day, we all live in the same home called earth. First of all, it is crucial to improve animals living condition in zoos or aquaria. Second, put more effort on saving endangered species, and last but not least, start educating people by creating a program to help them show love toward animals from kindergarten to college and furthermore in their life.
It is upsetting to know that the human race cares more about money then the earth's environment. (Geer). If less whales were killed, maybe Japan would realise that they do not need all that whale meat. Whales are huge and may have many species, but these species can easily decrease if they are killed continuously. These continuous killings have affected how whales can
Did you know there is a subspecies of dolphin called Maui’s dolphin and there is estimated to be less than 55 left on the planet! With their slow reproduction rates, it is a challenge for their population to grow. While some people believe saving these animals is a waste of time and money, what I will tell you is fact and cannot be argued. I have always had an interest in endangered species and have spent hours researching whales and dolphins on the internet. Though the decline in whale and dolphin population may not directly impact us living today, it has a great impact on the future of the environment and generations to come.

The issue of animal rights is often overlooked in this society, and I've wanted that to change for as long as I can remember. My original idea was to start a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at my high school, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to raise enough interest and the project would be a flop.
Scientifically tested animals are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. The majority of animals scientists use for testing, are not protected by the AWA. The AWA does not protect the animals that need to be protected the most. “Does not protect mice, rats, farm animals, or all cold blooded animals” (3). “26 million animals are used for testing just in the United States, and 95% are not protected by the AWA” (3). Most scientists refuse to protect animals used for testing because it is expensive to keep animals healthy and in good conditions. Because animals are not protected by the AWA ,they are kept in very poor facilities. “ AWA has the minimum standards that animals have to be fed, hydrated, and kept in a sanitary environment” (1). Testing facilities do not follow this rule because the animals are not protected. Animals die because of the horrible conditions they are kept in. For example, crammed areas where animals are deprived of food and water.
