When faced with adversity, some people stand up and preform to the best of their ability while others crack under the pressure. In our society, mental toughness is a skill that holds high value to anyone striving to attain success. It is often the thought of being the most powerful or most talented that encompasses our desire for success. In every venture pursued by mankind there is a constant drive to be at the top and to continuously improve. Professional athletes are watched and often criticized by millions of people, which make for some very tense moments. When they let a high-pressure situation disrupt their mental ‘flow’ it can effectively inhibit their physical ability. Tiger Woods is a highly successful professional golfer who, in the past, has been seemingly immune to pressure. Bartholomew, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas says, “During a match, Tiger Woods doesn’t have to puzzle over how to make a particular swing and the mechanics of his arm movements–he’s executed every single one of those physical moves before and could do all of them in his sleep. What he’s got to be able to do is allow his body to deliver the desired results. Ironically, you want to keep the mind from getting in the way of the performance (Matt Hempel)”. Tiger has always been able to handle the pressure in the past, but recently when there has been a high incentive to win, he disappoints. “In the U.S. Open, Woods bogeyed and/or double bogeyed five out of the first six holes on the final day to take himself out of the running for the Olympic Club crown… On the grandest of stages Woods continues to come up short. (Daniels)”. Some of the most memorable moments of choking occur when the whole world is watching and there is a high incentive for success. There are a number of reasons this can happen but the most common is paralysis by analysis, in other words, overthinking. A person like Tiger Woods can preform a perfect golf swing nearly every time, but if he overthinks his action it can disrupt a once fluid, flawless performance. The result is a poor shot which puts him in a tough position to be competitive. This proves that even the best of the best sometimes fall victim to intense
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
At some point in life most people have allowed at least one challenge to defeat them, if not more. Then there are those people who view these challenges as simply that, a challenge. This was the theme throughout Kyle Maynard’s novel, No Excuses, I learned that it is how we go about conquering these challenges that defines us as people. Throughout his novel he notes things will not always come easily; therefore, it is up to us to dig deep and conquer our goals. By finding alternate routes and adjusting your mindset, we are able to achieve any goal we set our minds to. Because it is not the obstacle that holds us back but it is ourselves that keeps us from fulfilling our greatest
It starts with Courage which is describes as the ability of doing something that scare you everyday. The article states that they should stop being coddling and has to faced their failure so that they can learn from it and stand up so that they can go forward. The next point is the conscientiousness which is the main key because it is the ability of taking responsible and the conscience of doing what's right and importance. With conscientiousness in the human being character is describes as the big five such as being an open minded, agree with what is right, be conscience and make right decisions to achieve the work needed. Long term goals and endurance will bring you to your goals because it's the base of your work. Without it we can not make it to the end game. The more you have resilience and Optimism , the more you work harder. Your objectif, your surrounding your positives and negatives aspects of life give you Grit. It helps you to understand better what placed those. The role Grit play in your life and in our world of today. Just like it says in the article “ Optimism+confidence+creativity= Resilience =Hardiness=(+/-) Grit. The last point not the least, excellence vs perfection’ first of all nobody is perfect but as human we try to work hard so that we can make it to Excellency which guide us to the endgame. But a grittiest person is someone who doesn’t look for excellency only but work hard to meet perfection just like in a soccer game or an athletics sport. As an example, in a soccer team, there is always one soccer player that everyone love and want his team to win, so to do so all the team need to have Grit and be more gritteir than the other team to win.In addition, the article of Margaret Perlis and professor Duckworth about Grit can be benefit to college students because it can help them to make better decisions, to be able to have an object and to be grittier about what they want. Introduction- In order to succeed in life, you have to be open to trying new experiences, even if you know you might fail. If you do fail, you have to persevere and try again if you want to reach your goal. To become better than you are, you must be exposed to new ideas and moments of failure and doubt.

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting [revealing] talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant [hidden],” –Horace. These wise words of Horace prove a point. Everyone has talents of some kind, however these people need to discover it on their own. Adversity, whether it be danger, hardship, or a simple challenge between friends, gives people the motivation to do things they wouldn’t have done otherwise.
Hours before a match, athletes in all corners of the world tend to freak out due to all the psychological factors that accompany performance in sports. Stop for a quick second and imagine becoming a Manchester United Striker or a Denver Broncos Wide-Receiver. For those who did not know already, these two positions are among the hardest in the sports world to play. Not only must the person assigned to these positions stay up until the early hours of the morning studying plays and formations so they might better assist their team come match day, but they also act as the main way the teams they play for get any points. If the expectation of being the team’s top scorers isn’t enough, they must also act as an inspiration to every other teammate that plays alongside them. Even though most people say psychological factors have no effect on an athlete’s performance in sport, athletes are negatively affected by the psychological aspects because of pre-game jitters they may experience, the relationship each athlete has with the stadium crowd, and the toll each match has on the athletes’ bodies.
How would it feel to be able to achieve anything that you ever dreamed of? This is possible with the right mindset and an extremely hard working attitude. The keys to this is holding a growth mindset, which aids you in embracing challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as the path to mastery, learn from criticism, and find lessons and inspiration. Another crucial element for success is grit and what that short word basically determines is your strength of character. Having a growth mindset and using grit can help you achieve whatever goals that’s being attempted.
A willpower muscle strategy involves the will to take on challenges that requires a person to do something he or she would not have done. For example, when faced with a situation that makes one feel like giving up, instead of giving up, you find another way of tackling the problem. The willpower muscle strategy involves the ability to doing things other people would not, when faced with the same circumstances. The strategy essentially involves resisting the temptation to give in to challenges (Watkins, 22). In an academic setting, researchers found that students in American schools who resisted short term temptations and stayed focused often had exceedingly impressive grades. To determine the success rate of this strategy, researchers conducted another study where the participants were asked to suppress their feelings when watching an upsetting documentary film. The participants were thereafter to conduct a subsequent physical stamina test. The participants who showed their emotions while watching the documentary film gave up sooner as opposed to those who did not. Developing the willpower muscle strategy involves being able not to be swayed easily by emotions that hinder a person from achieving his or her set goals. In achieving success, a person should employ the use of such strategy when faced with hard challenges and difficulties. Bill Gates, one of the wealthiest men on earth when asked what his biggest success was, he said his biggest success was the ability to resist the urge of giving up (Watkins,
These quotes make it clear of Tiger Woods’ impact on the game of golf and the entertainment world in general. But how did he get that way? Under Gardener’s Model, Woods fits in the bodily kinesthetic intelligence, but all professional athletes possess this trait. To be the greatest in the sport of golf, a player must possess multiple intelligences. Tiger Woods is great because he blends that with great intrapersonal, and interpersonal skills, and his minor intelligences of verbal linguistic, and scholastic achievement.
Throughout life, every day gives the ability to build confidence and spark ambition in us. People can turn negative or positive memories or thoughts to become successful; just like many athletes, celebrities, or civilians that we see. From Derrick Rose, who was notorious for his explosive quickness
In the article named “Tight Collar: The New Science of Choking Under Pressure” written by David Dobbs, athletes benefit from a professor's journey to find examples on why choking under pressure can happen because of over thinking and clear thinking. In late May 2008, the author and a friend named Sian Beilock that is a professor at the university of Chicago was sitting at a baseball game. His friend Beilock had an interest in the infamous choking under pressure. What made a professional batter hit like an amateur? This was the reason they decided to sit just a few rows behind home plate. They were waiting for a choke, and this particular game was intense. Both teams were fighting for first place. Then the game did just what they wanted, surely,

The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
Resilience is the ability to cope with change. The resilience has long been touted as a essential capability for bouncing back from leadership setbacks. Resilience is not easily attainable in today’s ever-changing business environment. The faith that there will be an immediate solution when it’s not immediately evident, and the tenacity to carry-on despite a nagging gut feeling that the situation is hopeless; it requires courage to achieve such high level of success in one’s career. A strong leader tries to keep away frequent setbacks and new challenges in face of uncertainty. The practical knowledge that he/she gains through this learning experience guide the organization through difficult times.
