Women's Values in Past, Present and Future
In the early 20’s, things like getting married at an early age while
you were still at your prime, building a family, buying a house with a
“white picket fence” were important.
Then in the 30’s, getting married and having a family was still the
most important thing, but also perhaps becoming a socialite and
presenting a good imaging.
*NOTE: It may be important to note that women were always expected to
‘keep up appearances’ or be perfect and project the right image. At
this point, having a career was relatively not important
In the 60’s is when women started getting out there and looking for
jobs. Although having a family/husband was still important, women
started getting jobs.
However, the jobs they were getting were not like the men’s - they
mostly had jobs like secretaries, teachers, nurses (jobs that have
become stereotypical.)
As time progressed, the importance of having a career and being
independent grew among women.
We definitely saw this in the early ‘80’s with women starting to break
into the business world. The importance of this to women was shown in
movies and music of the ‘80s.
Even in fashion, we started seeing women dressing like men - I.e.
blazers, pants instead of skirts, ties…careers, independence, and
equality became even more important.
During the ‘90’s and up until today, women still find family
important, but they recognize that personal stability, independence,
education and your career are #1.
* NOTE - We see this belief in magazines like Cosmopolitan magazine as
images as successful working women are portrayed.

through personal accounts, statistics, historical findings from books
and the internet, we will “set the stage”, or describe what was going
on at the time to answer the other questions like the obstacles women
had to overcome ( ie. Unequal pay ), or education and opportunities
(ie. The growth of their opportunities or lack their of.) Our group
decided to answer the question of what women find important to not
only present the project in a more interesting way and not just report
the information, but to make it more personal. So far, we have had
success in our change in organization for we are finding it much
easier to systematize the information and that is, in turn, making our
assignment all the better.
Actually the blasts of the 1950s highly affected various ladies; books and magazine articles ("Don't Be Afraid to Marry Young," "Cooking To Me Is Poetry," " Femininity Begins At Home ") encouraged ladies to leave the workforce and spotlight on their parts as spouses and moms. The possibility that a ladies' most imperative role was to hold up under and back kids wasn't new yet it began to create a considerable measure of disillusionment among ladies who yearned for a better life. An argument has been raised that women have to be in charge of their home due to a man’s unwillingness to take over parenting responsibilities. That is quite beneficial to the women’s rights movement for the reason father’s helping a lot more time with children, building a stronger family relationship. With all the new acts being passed women were able to go to school and work, and women pursued these new opportunities. There was a rising rate of women enrolling in colleges. Kate Chopin wrote stories of women in different states of independence from the men in their lives. She felt strongly about feminism and wanted women to be liberated from the dependence of men. By looking at Chopin’s stories we can see how the characters longed to be strong and independent women. In “The Story of an Hour”, when Mrs. Mallard hears of her husbands death she feels liberated and is described as:

The Changing Roles and Status of Women In 1903 the suffragette movement was born with the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (WPSU) by Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daughters Christabel and Sylvia. At first the newly formed suffragettes relied on spreading propaganda to gain support. However, on the 18th October 1905 they gained considerable unplanned publicity when Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney stood up at a public meeting and asked if a Liberal government would introduce women's suffrage. In the early 1900’s the ideal woman would be dressed with long dresses and would normally have long hair. Several events such as World War I, in July of 1914, changed women’s role in society. They were not only taking care of the children and the household but they were also taking the role of a man. As men went to war, women replaced them in factories. This caused woman to be more independent. Women realized that having a job was something that could be done; their sex didn’t restrict them from taking this action. This was extremely important as it lead to women being more confident and capable. In the 1920s young women began to change. For centuries, women has always been dominated and controlled by men. Society has viewed women as the weaker gender and relied on men in order to survive. As time went on, things have changed, society has became more advance and so are women. During the World War II, women have increased their role in the society by replacing the men’s in the labor market and also increased their status in the society. Today, the growth of women in the work force continually to raise and so are their status. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Bureau of Economic Research, statistics have shown 58.1% of women were in the labor market in 2011 (USBLS) compared to employment rate during the war was 35% of women in the labor market in 1945 (Bussing-Burks). So what factors must have interested women to move from being housewife to the work force? Explanations can be derived through observations of their relationship in the household, their relative status in the society, and their rationality in decision-making.
It is, therefore, natural for most companies to think that women cannot be as capable as men in terms of assuming strenuous or challenging positions because women, by default, become less participatory and more vulnerable when they start to have family and children. Apparently, this situation has led to various gender discriminations in the labor market. In conclusion, although the roles of men and women have radically changed over the turn of the century, it is still inevitable to have various gender-related occupational differences because the social and biological roles of women and men do not really change. Society still perceives women as the home makers and men as the earners, and this perception alone defines the differing roles of men and women in the labor market.
