Imagine living in a house where your husband is constantly treating you as a second class citizen, or working in a workplace where the men are being payed a lot more, and are given opportunities that are not available to you all because of your gender. Or living in a society that believes that women belong at home, taking care of the children, and are not allowed to work outside of the home. In some circumstances, that is reality to many. Stereotyping men and women is a thing that occurs all around the world, and has been around for a countless amount of years. The women’s rights movement began around the year 1848. Over those many years, women all over the world fought hard for equality and rights including the right to own property and the right to vote. International Women’s Day (March 8th) was created to represent the hard work and determination of many to allow for equality of women. On January 21st, 2017, thousands around the world joined together to protest the importance of women’s rights and the rights of all people. Women play a significant and important role in society today, and without strong, independent women, the world would not be the same. Women are known to “engage in social activities and work for the betterment of the society… contribute enormously in the field of health care… improve the level of sanitation and hygiene… [and are] not only the creator and maintainer of her child, but an educator and disciplinarian as well.” (Importance of Women in our Society). These many reasons show how the roles women play in our society are critical to the success of families, and the overall well being of the workplace, and the world in general. As well as playing a large role in society, women are also consumers. They spend a significant amount of money in the household, and they make decisions on most financial transactions. “The global incomes of women are predicted to reach $18 trillion by 2018” (Leslie Johnson, Contributing Writer, ATLANTA: In CRE, women are creating new space). Contrastingly, there are some situations where men play a primary role in the home, as well. There is nothing wrong with that being the case, if it works for both the husband and the wife.
