The woman's rights movement largely contributed to the extent of democratic ideals expansion. Women have never been treated the same as men and documents show how woman were treated back then. Frances Grage wrote, “that man over there, says that women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches” (Doc 7). This shows how in the 1800’s women were looked on as. It’s saying women are incapable of doing things for themselves and need a man to help them. Another example is a picture of a woman under a bridge with her child and the husband crossing the bridge drinking his life away (Doc 4). This document shows the life of typical women during this time. The woman stays at home cleaning the house and caring for the children while the husband goes out drinking and having fun. Another source showed how the women's movement rebelled. “Almost 300 people... arrived at the convention” on July 19, 1848. This is an example of people standing up for their democratic ideals. Education during this time period was severely lacking. An outside source showed this my saying “children might attend a part-time, one room school. Teachers had limited education. Most children simply did not go to school”. This shows how bad the education system was and how it needed to be changed. Thanks to Horace Mann an American education reformer, this did change. Horace believed “right to education of every human...Correlative duty of every government to see that the means of education are provided for all” (Doc 3). This shows how Horace Mann believed education should have been and that the government needed to fix it. greatly. Abolition of slavery during the reform movement had a large impact on expansion of democratic ideals. The abolition movement's goal was to free the slaves and end racial discrimination. Unfortunately the African Americans had “no constitutional or legal protect” (Doc 1), wrote William Garrison, a white abolitionist. A source told me that “Garrison's efforts led to the formation of the American Anti-Slavery Society”. Which is a good thing because “crime of having a dark complexion, suffer the pangs of hunger, the inflection of strides and the ignamit of brutal servitude” (Doc 1). This quote shows how poorly Africans were being treated and how it's a good thing Garrison organised the movement. This demonstrates how the abolition of slavery lead to a large impact on democratic ideals. During 1825 to 1855 the reform movements women's rights, education and abolition lead to a large expansion of democratic ideals. The woman's rights movement lead to a great expansion of democratic ideals because of how poorly women were treated and how badly people wanted to see that changed. Education was another big contributor because people wanted to make learning more accessible to children and give them a better education. Lastly, the abolition of slavery, which really allowed people to fight for human rights and express what they wanted from the democracy. Thus explaining how a great expansion of democratic ideals occurred during the reform movement.

Led by Samuel F.B. Morse this reformation made it so that any foreigner who came into the United States after the law was changed was not allowed the right of suffrage (Document D). The democratic ideal of Liberty includes political freedom, which in itself includes the right to participate in political processes. If foreigners are not able to vote, that liberty which was a democratic ideal of the Constitution has been taken from them. Fire needs wood to burn, water needs heat to boil, and the women’s right movement needed abolition to begin the real fight. Social movements refer to informal groups of people who focus on either political or social issues. The goal of the social movement is to change things in society, to refuse to go along with the norm, and to undo a social change. For example, the Women’s Rights Movement that began in the 1840s was geared towards getting women more equality in relation to political, social, and economic status in society (Foner). Along with this, women gained a louder voice to speak out about what they wanted to change and implemented the change. Prior to the Women’s Rights Movement, women were often timid, compliant, obedient, and mistreated. After the 1920s, a movement towards more equality was shifted in society views, however not all were convinced or changed by the new ideas of women. Although women began to get increased rights, the typical gender roles, which they were expected to follow did not loosely lesson. Women still found themselves doing the same gender roles, house roles, and family roles even after the 1920s. It was not until the 1960s when the Feminist movement began (Foner). The literary piece is “Why I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady and the goal of the Feminist Movement was to create new meanings and realities for women in terms of education, empowerment, occupation, sexual identity, art, and societal roles. The Women’s Suffrage movement paved the way to the nineteenth Amendment in the United States Constitution that allowed women that right.
