The start of equal rights The world has evolved more than ever before in the 18th century and today there are still some men in the world who treat women wrong and think women can’t do the same things as men.There are many women today who have become more successful than MOST men like Sheryl Sandberg, Elizabeth Holmes, and Christy Walton and it is time for all of the women in the world to be treated equally. One such woman, Sojourner Truth wrote a short essay about women having the same treatment as men and she argues that women are humans too and should not be treated like slaves. Deborah Gray White was one of the first persons to vigorously attempt to examine the abounding trials and tribulations that the slave women in the south were faced with. Mrs. White used her background skills acquired from participating in the Board of Governors Professor of History and Professor of Women 's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University to research the abundance of stories that she could gather insight from. It was during her studies that she pulled her title from the famous Ain’t I A Woman speech given by Sojourner Truth. In order to accurately report the discriminations that these women endured, White had to research whether the “stories” she was writing about were true or not.
Women, like black slaves, were treated unequally from the male before the nineteenth century. The role of the women played the part of their description, physically and emotionally weak, which during this time period all women did was took care of their household and husband, and followed their orders. Women were classified as the “weaker sex” or below the standards of men in the early part of the century. Soon after the decades unfolded, women gradually surfaced to breathe the air of freedom and self determination, when they were given specific freedoms such as the opportunity for an education, their voting rights, ownership of property, and being employed.
Sojourner Truth, writer of When Woman Gets Her Rights Man Will Be Right, offers a critical article that exposes the reasons of why women should be included and taken into account when talking about human rights. Truth first starts by describing that the slaves have gotten their rights, but, she claims that there is a crucial problem: there is “not a word about the colored women” (37). This leads to the domination of women by men. In fact, Truth claims that black women work hard, and when they get home “[men] ask for their money and take it all, and then scold because there is no food” (37). In the speech, "Ain't I a Woman?" Sojourner Truth gives examples of how she was robbed of womanhood and the amazing gift of motherhood. As a slave in the late 1700's to early 1800's, Truth was used for manual labor. Many people would expect Truth to gain others respect due to her unyielding work as a slave, but in reality all she wants is the respect of being a mother. The ideology of the Cult of Domesticity, especially prevalent during the late 1800’s, emphasized the notion that a woman’s role falls within the domestic sphere and that females must act in submission to males. One of the expected jobs of a woman included bearing children, despite the fact that new mothers frequently experienced post-partum depression. If a woman were sterile, her purposefulness diminished. In her speech, “Ain’t I a Woman”, Sojourner Truth expresses her concerns regarding her identity as a woman and the identity of women everywhere. She begins by pointing that, though “the negros of the South and the women at the North” are vigilant in their pursuit of equality, the opinion of white men will likely prevail. Truth then recalls the “definition” of a woman which includes the “need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches.” However, when she looks back at her treatment in life she realizes that she, although a woman, is not being treated as such. Truth recalls her work in the fields, work that is typically expected of a man. She recalls the pain of losing her children as proof of her strength as a woman. In 17th century Euro-America Puritan society believed that men played a patriarchal role upon women, and that this role was instituted by God and nature. The seniority of men over women lay within both the household and the public sphere. The household, immediate family living in the same dwelling was subject to the male as head figure of the house. The public sphere also known as the social life within the Puritan community consisted of two echelons. These echelons consisted of formal and informal public. The formal public consisted of woman and indentured servants. Women were to stay within the informal public and stay in the shadows of the men. The government held large ties with the church in the 17th century. Though women were subordinates by both the eye of the church and the government, women found ways to express authority both intentionally and unintentionally. Women began to act independently of patriarchal society and their roles in society’s sphere. Economic, social, and religious patterns were determining factors for women’s roles.
In the Women’s Rights Convention of 1851, Truth repeatedly equates her worth to that of a man by her physical and intellectual abilities. Some of Truth’s statements at this convention include: “I have as much muscle as any man, and can do as much work as any man. I can carry as much as any mean, and I can eat as much too”. These statements highlight the fact that women were thought to have less physical and intellectual ability than men, and as such were afforded fewer rights. By recurrently equating herself to men in all of these arenas, Truth displayed the commonalities between men and women. Furthermore, Truth’s views came from the stance of a former African American slave, who were not. It is clear that during the French revolution of 1789 many women wanted to gain rights and equality among citizens. This is evident because of how much they participated and took on leadership roles in political movements. Despite all of their hard work and dedication they were unable to secure their political position. I want to examine what they did and why it may have failed. So, firstly, I will discuss some of the contributions and actions made by women, then I will discuss the reactions of the other citizens and political leaders that were men and then lastly answer the prevalent question: how did these things lead to failure for women’s rights?
Before women can prove they too deserve the same rights as men, they must first put to rest the myths and beliefs of their status in this country.
