Why do we go to school? To get a good education. Why do we need a good education? To get a well paying job that allows us to splurge on what our and our family’s heart desires. Now imagine a woman and a man both having the same exact job that they had worked their whole lives to get only for the woman to be paid less than the man just for her gender. Women are discriminated against everyday solely based on the gender they did not even choose.Canadians have been fighting against the never ending wage gap between men and women for centuries. In fact, in 2015, Statistics Canada reported that Canadian women earned 87 cents to every dollar made by men. Enough is enough when it comes to the amount of disrespect women can take just because society …show more content…
Women and men can both go to the same school, earn the same degrees, work the same job and women are still paid only a fraction of what the man is paid because of her gender. A question in your mind might be why does this gap exist? Well, over the past three decades, the number of women in the workforce getting the same education and jobs as men do has increased exponentially from about 42% to about 60% (Canadian Women’s Foundation). Since women are not traditionally known to work in the workplace, society has been having a tough time adjusting to this great change. Women are seen as more domestic workers who should focus more on household and child related occupations or staying at home opposed to doing a “man’s job” (Canadian Women’s Foundation). They are seen as incapable to handle what a man was born to handle & their skills should be taken somewhere more appropriate for them. Common workplaces cannot phantom a female working in their offices & places of work, so they decide to discriminate against them by lowering their pay. Clearly, women are only paid less than men because although they may have the same job, society is unable to change their old time ways to accept that both men and women can do the same job just as well as each other if not better Also, there are laws against employers paying women and men …show more content…
Firstly, paying women less than men is discouraging them within the workplace. They feel used, undervalued and thus are encouraged to take up occupations society labels them to have such as maids. This means that workplaces will be losing productive and capable workers. Take the words of Professor Sarah Kaplan, the director of the Institute for Gender and the Economy at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, “if you pay women less than men, they feel devalued in the workplace. They’re more likely to drop out of the workplace. You then lose a productive worker in an economy where we’re desperate for talent … There are plenty of economic reasons why we should have equal pay.” (The Globe & Mail). Discouraging female employees increases the dropout rate in industries in need of their services, thus affecting the economy and the revenue collected from said industries. Also, the economy would profit more if they equally paid women and men. According to PwC Canada, equal pay “improves profitability, workplace culture and the economy as a whole,” (Globe & Mail). Canada would have an approximate $105 billion increase in Gross Domestic Product profit if women were treated equally as men in the workplace (Globe & Mail). Canada would only benefit from equal pay for men and women, yet society decides not to for no other reason other than they are stuck in
Even in the modern society woman are constantly looked down. A quick comparison the average wage of a man and a woman shows that woman are still paid lower wages for the same amount of work.
In the workplace environment it is a known fact that women are passed over for higher positions that would allow them to earn higher wages. Author of “Workplace Gender Discrimination and the Implicit Association Test" Jo- Ann Kadola stated, “Women earn 18 % less per hour than men working the same job, with the same title, with the same credentials even when a woman has a higher education.” (Kadola23) This is known as the gender gap, it happens in all occupations whether in management, directors or any high level position. Overall men and women never earn the same pay for the same job. This is known to be a worldwide fact. On every job women are always asked to prove or provide credentials for a job that men are able to obtain without proof. Kadola also stated, “Women have to show skills more often, they are required to take or be more responsible than men.” (Kadola24) Men are generally respected more. Their opinions hold more value. Men tend to have more freedom in making decisions. When it comes to merit raises they will receive a higher percentage based on the fact that they are men. When women enter the workplace it is a perceived notion that she will get married and start a family. Therefore a working mother is looked down upon based on the fact she is no staying home caring
On the contrary, women still get paid less than men. According to CNN Money, “men still make more than women in most professions -- considerably more in some occupations than others, according to a new study by the job search site Glassdoor”. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
When women are actually given the same jobs as men, they may be paid the same but typically, they are not able to reach the higher positions in the company that men do. Even with their 77 cents to a man’s dollar, “women still tend to bear a larger responsibility for child care and other household matters within families” (Mazorelle). Women are not given the opportunity to earn as much as men, and they still have to take on a majority of the responsibilities of the household.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Women and men get the same amount of education; so why are men getting payed more than women? Jeanne Sahadi stated on CNN Money that, “In 2014, the median income for men who worked full-time was $50,383. For women, it was $39,621.” Women always being looked as the minority as mentioned in the essay by Heiman and Bookspan. Women work just as hard as men to get the same level education to obtain the same job; if not harder because there are some women that are single moms taking care their child without any help from the father. This is really unfair towards women not getting equal pay as men and sexism somehow needs to be demolished from
For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. (Rowen) Although, traditionally most women do not work to provide for there family and there are not so many independent women during World War II. After World War II more women lost their jobs to veterans returning to the workforce. Women in the workforce after the war have been discriminated ever since. The idea of women as weak and cannot perform there jobs
In addition, women are paid less than men for the same type of work. According to Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg mentions that women were paid fifty-nine cents for every dollar men were paid in 1996, but women protested to raise the compensation to seventy-seven cents (6). This means that even though a woman and a man perform the same work such as an engineer does, both do the same assignments and have the same responsibilities in the technology place, men are paid twenty three cents more than women. Moreover, women suffer from “gender discount” which means women have to pay for being part of the workplace or society ...
In the workplace, women do not receive the same benefits that men do. Some women do the same job, for the same amount of hours, and still do not receive the same pay for their work. Is there a specific reason behind this? No, it is just one of the many inequalities that goes on on the job. As pointed out in the essay by Susan Faludi, Blame it on Feminism, women earn less. The average women’s paycheck is twenty percent less than their male counterparts. Men with only high school education’s make more than some women who have graduated college. Most women are still working the traditional “female” jobs: secretaries, teachers, and nurses for example. Construction work, engineering, and doctor’s, are considered “out of our reach” and men’s jobs. Women are very capable of doing these jobs, but most times when applying for a “man’s job” are not taken seriously. American women are more likely not to receive health insurance and twice as likely not to draw pension then American men. They face the biggest gender-biased pay gap in the world.
From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.
It can be heard anywhere that there is a sizeable wage gap and that women make much less than men simply because of the fact they are women. Once again, people may claim that it is merely an illusion that America is a wonderful equalizer, since equal places wouldn't pay their women 76 cents for every dollar a male employee earns. I believe that there are many flaws in that thinking as many things are often overlooked. Women, can in fact, not do everything men can do. God created us differently for a reason and when that is tinkered with, God's original plan is discredited.
Many individuals believe, especially men, that women should have a different salary rate than men make in their earnings. Women are believed to be less intelligent, weaker, and small for many types of careers. So therefore, the payment for females should be lower at all time. However, according to Statistic of Labor, females tend to achieve more tasks than men do. The rights of women should include equal pay no matter their gender.
There are laws to protect women in Canada. Despite all of this progress that has been made, Canada has a long way to go before gender equality becomes a reality. Even though the wage gap has decreased, that doesn’t mean that men and women receive equal pay. The United Nations has found that women make 77 cents for every dollar that a man makes. In Canada, women earn 87 cents for every dollar that a man makes, even though there are laws against this.
Women’s right to equal pay or gender pay gap has been a subject of discussion over the years in the united states, women perform similar jobs to men, but are paid
Unequal pay in the workplace is very unfair, especially for women. For example, consider the case of the U.S. women’s soccer team as Bloomberg says, “Relative to their competition, the U.S. women’s team has dramatically out-preformed the men.” To clarify, even though the men’s team gets more money, the women’s team is even more successful than the men’s team. Another fact Bloomberg says, regarding world rankings, is, “In the past decade the women’s teams ranking hasn’t dipped below No. 2; the men haven’t been higher than No. 14 and are currently ranked 28.” Even though the women’s team has only been ranked 1st or 2nd, they still get paid less than the men’s team.
Are you a woman? Do you work? Or if you are a man do you know a woman that is special to you that works, like your mother, grandmother, aunt or significant other. Would you like it if they were not getting treated or paid the same as a male worker doing the exact same job? Men got treated better than women and were paid more than them until the Equal Pay Act of 1963. There is a reasonable explanation as to why though. It was mostly because they thought men worked harder, that women were typically the primary caregiver of their family, and that men dominated the workforce.
