In media today, women seem to have a terrible way of being represented. This can even be brought as far back as the early 1950 's. When we look at the past we can see that there are so many similarities to the present day. One thing that we all seem to notice from the media is that women are constantly being sexually objectified. Women are often represented as individuals who are seen as just a means of sexual gratification and nothing else. Whereas men are seen as sexual subjects. This brings the question if this will ever change in society or will this keep going on for future generations. In this essay, I will be talking about how women in media are objectified in reality TV shows. When we watch reality TV we tend to watch it for the laughs, for the gossip or maybe because it is our favorite show. This is seen throughout the whole show especially with Rob Kardashian and his sisters Kim and Khloe. Rob seems to use both of them to get his rise in success for his clothing lines. Miss Representation, a documentary film produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom released in 2011, presents a contemporary issue which is the misrepresentation of women’s portrayal in mass media. The media is powerful in shaping audience’s belief in how to be feminine. Women are expected to be beautiful, attractive, and even sexual on the media to attract audience’s attention. Also, the film points out the existence of social system in which men are considered more powerful and dominant than women. Finally, the film tries to increase the awareness of female real value including capability, educational achievement, and leadership. Consuming the media wisely to eliminate gendered stereotypes can help young women build their confidence and be successful.
Instead, women are being discriminated and treated as inferior due to the stereotypes that are portrayed in the media. The media creates and reproduces ways of seeing that at a minimum reflect and shape our culture. We can look at the media to understand more about a culture’s values and norms, if we realize the limitations of looking at the media. The documentary Miss Representation identifies the numerous ways women are misrepresented in the media, including in news, advertisements, movies, and television. The title Miss Representation emphasizes that the way we portray women in the media is a misrepresentation, as in it does not do women justice and oftentimes, has a negative impact on the perception of women. Frequently in the media, women lack leading roles and complexity, are held to an unrealistic standard of beauty, and are subject to objectification and beautification (Newsom, 2011). These misrepresentations lay the groundwork for gender socialization, and therefore, shape how women perceive themselves and are perceived by others.

I chose these four journal writings because I believe they are the strongest pieces I have written from the second half of the semester. The main focus of these journals was based on readings under the women as objects topic. The oppression of women has led to females being objectified and used as gratification for men. A woman’s body and appearance have become a commodity, especially in the media. Films, television shows, music and advertisements use women’s bodies to attract their audience and sell products. The movie watched in class “Killing Us Softly 4,” highlights this fact while presenting how women are represented throughout the media. The media has set and perpetuated a particular standard of beauty that is restrictive, but for some many women completely unattainable. The women represented in the media are young, thin and have western or European characteristics. Where does that leave the majority of women that do not fall under this category? This leads to women developing eating disorders to achieve an ideal body image that is manufactured through Photoshop and other picture editing systems. Women of color, women with disabilities or any woman that does not follow this standard is not represented within the media. When a few women do break this mold and become famous, they are set at a different standard. These women’s differences become the highlighted feature of their fame. Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
Today, there are numerous reality stars that come from the sports, entertainment and political world and the format is a staple of television programing. Though reality TV seems like a fairly new concept, reality shows were first introduced in 1948 when Allen Funt then debuted “Candid Camera.” A hidden camera show that saw people be the centre of gags, often at their expense and in 1973 a documentary series called “An American Family” which gave birth to one of the earliest examples of personality driven TV. Whether it is an adrenaline pumping baking competition, a talent based show with singing and dancing, or the pure entertainment of a day in the life of celebrities most everyone watches some form of reality television. There seems to be a few different sides of reality TV that make it so entertaining for people to watch. There seems to be the shows that lure people in because of the motivational aspect, the drama, or the deep down genuine appearance. Young people consume great amounts of television, music videos, and advertisements. Unfortunately, the media frequently portray women in a sexually objectifying way, meaning that a woman’s sexuality is used to gain attention or sell a product (Stankiewicz & Rosselli, 2008). Regardless of our awareness, sexually objectifying messages have a strong influence on society’s implicit attitudes about women. Such messages are associated with anti-woman attitudes (Stankiewicz & Rosselli, 2008) and girls’ self-objectification (Vandenbosch & Eggermont, 2014). It is approximated that 94% of popular adolescent sitcoms contain sexualizing messages about girls (Vandenbosch & Eggermont, 2014).
