Woman’s Work
“Working women are guinea pigs in a scientic experiment to show that sleep ins’t
necessary to human life,” mentions grinning.com. Women work twice as hard. Unlike
man, after a longs day of work he can come home and rest. Women can’t because they
have the responsibility of family matters that continue throughout the day, therefore their
job never ends. Julia Alvarez fiction poetry, “Woman’s work,” she describes how woman
are capable of resisting a physical type of job.
Further out through this six stanza poem Julia Alvarez elaborates on how seeking for a
better opportunity is the way to success.
Who says a woman’s work isn’t high art/? “She’d challenge as she scrubbed the
bathroom tiles”/ Keep house as if the address were your heart (Lis 1-3). The first stanza
of the poem gives the whole main idea, basically it mentions that women’s job aren’t as
efficient as males. The majority of women, such as single mothers or students have to
deal with any jobs that are offered to them just so they can support their loved ones or
to pay for their school and living expenses.
In other situations some women’s have their partners or parents to help them out,
therefore they get to spent time to enjoy their life and family. We’d clean the whole
upstairs before we’d start downstairs/. I’d sigh, hearing my friends outside/. Doing her
woman’s work was hard art.(Lis 4-6) As for these woman that have the opportunity to
have someone by their side. They don’t have to worry about the hard steps unlike the
single woman. As the poem mentions (“We’d clean…….”) it describes that hard
problems are deal with first, and lastly the easy ones, furthermore those woman who
have tried to do it on their...

paper as if it were her heart (lis 15-18). Looking for a new career is a great idea but
being your own boss would be considered a stupendous goal.
Life puts you through hard paths in life were you will need a hand, but face it the real
world is a “clock” every movement counts even if it’s a mistake it won’t stop, and there’s
no going back. Never give up because someone says you won’t make it! Woman will
sacrifice everything to keep the family in place and never see it fall. Therefore, woman
should always look forward because they will overcome every obstacle that’s comes
through with or without help!

The readers are apt to feel confused in the contrasting ways the woman in this poem has been depicted. The lady described in the poem leads to contrasting lives during the day and night. She is a normal girl in her Cadillac in the day while in her pink Mustang she is a prostitute driving on highways in the night. In the poem the imagery of body recurs frequently as “moving in the dust” and “every time she is touched”. The reference to woman’s body could possibly be the metaphor for the derogatory ways women’s labor, especially the physical labor is represented. The contrast between day and night possibly highlights the two contrasting ways the women are represented in society.
He mentions how far women have come since his grandmother's day, but realizes the country as a whole has more room to grow. He mentions how tough it can be for women to juggle a demanding career while raising a family. Both text reference what honor motherhood is but they also admit the demanding workforce can determine how successful a mother they can be. Women today may not face slavery, but they face double standards that limit them to be successful professionals and parents.
The McGuffey Readers mentions the women’s duty to clean in multiple places. In this handbook it gives clear directions to the woman on what she is to do when cleaning, “This ceremony completed, and the house thoroughly evacuated, the next operation is to smear the walls and ceilings with brushes dipped into a solution of lime. (Gorn 111). ” The book explains how it is the women’s job to thoroughly clean the house once a year in a manner that sounds very laborious!
There is no doubt that the literary written by men and women is different. One source of difference is the sex. A woman is born a woman in the same sense as a man is born a man. Certainly one source of difference is biological, by virtue of which we are male and female. “A woman´s writing is always femenine” says Virginia Woolf
Likewise, patriarchy creates an expected response from men. Society therefore places a big bet on the “superiority” of men. Since they are “stronger”, they should do all the “tough” jobs. As stated before, these expectations become blocks in an achievable equality in between men and women in health. However, this is not to say that women should start taking jobs generally done by men just to fend off the biases and inequality. What society should build towards to is not
There were many times during my research for this topic that I became emotional reading the stories of these women who had to endure the pain and the ridicule of people telling them they were not worthy, they were less than, when they knew they were capable of so much and if given the chance they would
Reading literature, at first, might seem like simple stories. However, in works like William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily,” Katherine Mansfield's “Miss Brill,” and Kate Chopin's “The Storm,” the female protagonists are examples of how society has oppressive expectations of women simply because of their gender.
Images of women throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have both shaped women’s outlook on their lives in the workplace, at home, and in politics, and have also encouraged change for them as individuals. While often times women are seen as weak individuals that have minor influence on society, artistic evaluations and various writings throughout history have successfully proved otherwise.
Throughout history and even today women are regarded as inconsequential. They are chattels or servants, a person without rights. In some present instances, women are struggling to show that they do have rights and can make a contribution to society if given the chance.
History accounts for the great contributions of women in promoting social justice, particularly in uplifting the morale and functions of women in the society. From being the oppressed gender, various women managed to change the traditional roles of women by fighting for their rights to be heard and for them to given equal opportunities. These women boldly stood against gender stereotypes of women and proved the entire world that they could defy conventions. Particularly at the turn of the 20th century, women battled against the oppressions brought by patriarchy in different ways. These activist women had crusaded for the promotion of their civil rights, sexual freedom, and pursued careers which were once forbidden to them.
Dermott (2006) argues that men work longer hours than women despite their role as fathers Doyal (2001) believes that as men tend to work in high-risk industrial jobs, they are more likely to suffer in terms of workplace accidents. In addition, according to Sharpe girls are improving in education and attitudes are changing. Now, girls are more likely to pursue higher education and careers compared to 30 years ago. This proves that changes in society have meant that males can also suffer inequality and attitudes are changing to allow women to suffer less
Society has redefined the role of woman by their works thru poetry that has changed their life
In the beginning, Mills discusses theoretical elements and has labeled this section as “General Theoretical Issues” and the second part is comprised of analysis having three sub chapters. The main section of the book examines feminist models of the text and investigates language typologies. According to Sara Mills, language is a form of social communication, a tool to transfer information and a set of mutually decided linguistic choices in any system (Crystal: 1995, 18). Language functions as sharing of thoughts in a framework where options are equally exclusive. Mills criticizes the traditional method to deal with legendary writings which often neglect the fact that the writer has no command over the stuff, being delivered by him or her. Another drawback of this conventional approach is that only the texts which have literary worth are selected for analysis (e.g. the works of Shakespeare, D.H. Lawrence, Beckett and so on) and women’s writings for stylistic analysis are often overlooked. TorilMoi (1985) and Elaine Showalter (1978) are of the view that “women’s writings have frequently been barred from standard status, by the procedure named phallocentric
...d women’s biological purpose has provided men a source of comparative advantage in work. It is, therefore, natural for most companies to think that women cannot be as capable as men in terms of assuming strenuous or challenging positions because women, by default, become less participative and more vulnerable when they start to have family and children. Apparently, this situation has led to various gender discriminations in the labor market.
More and more women work outside and inside the home. The double demands shouldered by these women pose a threat to their physical health. Whether you are an overworked housewife or an exhausted working mother the chances are that you are always one step behind your schedule. No matter how hard women worked, they never ended up with clean homes. Housewives in these miserable circumstances often became hysterical cleaners. They wore their lives away in an endless round of scouring, scrubbing, and polishing. The increased strain in working women comes from the reality that they carry most of the child-rearing and household responsibilities. According to social trends (1996), women always or usually do the washing in 79 percent of cases and decide the menu 59 percent of the time. Picking up the children at school or doing grocery shopping are just a few of the many typical household-tasks a woman takes on every day.
