Scope and Objective Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have the potential to improve the flexibility, productivity, and the quality of work life of an enterprise (Sage Research Staff, 2001). Berean Institute is a typical two year college with about a staff of sixty eight employees and 250 students per semester. Berean teaches cosmetology, barbering and the latest software and hardware technology, which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Berean currently has two locations in the Philadelphia area and using a Local Area Network (LAN). Berean¡¦s existing network infrastructure is wire line, and uses a T1. Remote users access the network through a dial-up modem pool. Berean¡¦s wire line network model severely limits the accessibility and effectiveness of the Berean network. For example, employees in Berean facilities are unable to access the network easily from meetings, the cafeteria, or anywhere other than their offices. In addition, the effectiveness of remote users is limited by the slow speed of present-day dial-up modem connections. The following introductory sections describe the problem to be investigated and the goal to be achieved. The introduction also provides an analysis of the relevance and significance of the research and a discussion of barriers and issues related to achieving the goal. In addition, the approach and resources to be used in accomplishing the goal are discussed. Finally, a brief summary is provided. Problem Statement and Goal The propose research will address a problem confronting many two year institutions in the present-day (i.e. how to best plan, design, and implement WLAN technologies). While WLAN technologies offer the benefits of mobility, reduced installation time, and decreased cost, many challenges must be met by institutions deploying them (Geier, 2005). These issues are related to security, speed, interoperability, and equipment selection, ease of use, reliability, signal interference, installation, and health risks. In addressing the problem, the proposed research will use the case study method to examine the plan, design, and implementation of WLAN technologies at Berean. At present, the non-wireless local area network (LAN) technologies employed by Berean include 10/100BaseT Ethernet at each desktop. Ethernet ports at the desktop are switch connected to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) T1 backbone. Berean¡¦s one remote facility connects to the network using switched Frame Relay services along with Internet Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. These technologies are of limited effectiveness in connecting employees while at work and at home via Berean network. Berean¡¦s infrastructure does not allow employees on the move to leverage the time they spend at meetings, in the cafeteria, and the other location to catch up on e-mail, retrieve information, or perform other work related activities (Sage Research Staff, 2005).
Project Name: Wireless Network Connection and Access for all offsite employees, mobile devices and buildings.
The rapid progress of embedded MEMS (micro-sensing technologies) and wireless communication has made wireless sensor networks possible. Such an environment may have many wireless nodes which are inexpensive; each node is capable of collecting, storing and processing environmental data, and communicating with neighboring nodes. These sensors are connected with wires in the past but tod...
IBM says that the problem is because of the rapid expansion of information and technology we as humans cannot keep up with the increase. Access to information is becoming rampant through the creation of wireless and handheld devices. These devices need a standard of production and connection to provide the greatest effect. IBM’s solution is a computer network that is “flexible, accessible, and transparent.” (The Solution, IBM Research) The system will...
Another benefit of an online portal is that users can work from home or from satellite offices as needed. For the sake of redundancy, it may be prudent to keep the Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to our satellite office; however, it would not be necessary. It would also be wise to remove the RAS and PBX from the company network. These legacy systems allow remote dial-up users to authenticate to the network, but their functionality could be accomplished through a web browser under the new system.
Virtual Private Network presents some advantages over the traditional network technologies. VPN offers direct cost savings over leased lines or long-distance calls for remote access, savings resulting from reduced training requirements and equipment, increased flexibility, scalability, and security. The main advantage of VPN is the cost savings of Internet VPN when compared to networks built using conventional leased lines. Leased lines include tariffs that have an installation fee, a fixed monthly cost, and a mileage charge. The cost to an organization of traditional leased lines may be reasonable at first but can increase exponentially as the organization grows. As an organization grows and more companies must be added to the network, the number of leased lines required increases dramatically. VPN that utilizes the Internet avoids this problem by simply tapping into the geographically distributed access already available. Another way VPN reduces costs is by reducing the need for long-distance telephone charges for remote access. Instead of having the offsite team of a company dial into the corporate modem bank via long distance lines, the company’s VPN allows them to simply place local calls to the ISP’s POP in order to connect to the corporate network.
This proposal is for a small office that will have users who are connected by Wi-Fi or cable. The network will include devices and resources that is shared among all the users. The network will need to have security measures in place to protect the entire network and keep the wireless access secure and available only to employees of the company.
The project team has identified several issues with the current network infrastructure. The first is the availability and cost of token ring hardware. Ethernet is the dominant network topology and is included on many devices at no cost. Equipment with token ring interfaces can be found but are much more expensive. Another problem is that the current hardware is about 10 years old and is experiencing increased maintenance costs. Another problem is that the majority of the existing cable plant does not meet minimal category 5 standards.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Network) or 802.11 networking is a phenomenal way of providing Internet wirelessly at a low cost. Using radio waves, a wireless network connects a PC, mobile phone or just about anything that connects to the internet wirelessly by a router. By transmitting signals at 2.4 or 5 GHz it allows the waves to transmit more data at a faster rate. Typical Wi-Fi standards are 802.11a, b, g, n, or ac and they can switch up the frequency depending on the model (Brain). Families can create their own wireless network that can be shared between family members without the use of hooking all their devices up to the modem and can also protect their home network from potential hackers with the use of a TKIP or AES encryption. Businesses can also create a “hotspot” which is an area that has wireless networks for free or at a set fee. This is extremely convenient for commuters that need internet access while they are at work, waiting on a plane, or just sitting at a coffee spot without the need for wires(Cox).
Through this case study I am going to be investigating the different wireless communications that are available, and also how they could benefit Staffordshire Health Authority. I will look at previous and current wireless standards, their differences and the speeds they can provide. I will also consider the best standards to use when working with a network to support VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Throughout the case study I will talk about the technologies that could work within our network environment, and others that would not be suitable or effective. Finally I will look at VoIP and how it will impact on Staffordshire Health Authority.
Local Area Networks also called LANs have been a major player in industrialization of computers. In the past 20 or so years the worlds industry has be invaded with new computer technology. It has made such an impact on the way we do business that it has become essential with an ever-growing need for improvement. LANs give an employer the ability to share information between computers with a simple relatively inexpensive system of network cards and software. It also lets the user or users share hardware such as Printers and scanners. The speed of access between the computers is lighting fast because the data has a short distance to cover. In most cases a LAN only occupies one or a group of buildings located next to each other. For larger area need there are several other types of networks such as the Internet.
The flexibility, mobility, and ease of installation has made the use of wireless LANs very attractive to organizations like hospitals, universities, and businesses that want the ease of connecting wirelessly. However the understanding of wireless LANs has also extended its interest to home users. Wireless LANS are now the preferred method of connectivity for ho...
A local Area Network (LAN) is a type of network typically used and connected in a small area, for instance, home, office, school or groups of building, in order to communicate with one another and share resource, such as printer or scanner. Those devices could be connected between each other by wired cable or wireless links, which is typically used as a standard LAN technology called IEEE 802.11. Usually, a local area network consists of computers and peripheral devices connected to a local domain server, which are used to share printers and other resources, such as disk storage, games or applications. Each LAN is either independent from any network or connects to other LANs, and, moreover, can additionally connect to Internet called Wide Area Network (WAN). In terms of practical use, a home network is typically individual LANs and multiple LANs, which refers to a home network setting up a guest network. In this paper, I will expound the main components making up a local area network (LAN), as well as technologies used to build a LAN.
Introduction: This is a 21th century, technology is the most important and improved thing of the human life. It makes life easier and faster. Development of faster sophisticated technology we have better and fast life. So all we are connect each other by computer network. There are two different way of network: Wired and wireless. Now day we can found network almost everywhere. Home, business, public place, Airport, Planes, hospitals, school, train everywhere we can found networking. Therefore, almost every sector of the economy that has affected by wired and wireless technology. Wired network and wireless protect both has security, But in general wireless network is less secure than wired networks. For proper security AP (access point) and its antenna should be right position. Also add a wireless access point or use a wireless router we can connect to network wirelessly. AS we using more and more of devices (smart phones, tablet and computers) rely on wireless networking, we have to improve our network security too.
Networks, including the internet, are one of the most essential things to businesses. Without computer networks, companies would be lost and would not have a way to communicate without these systems and this would cause businesses to operate slower (Network 1). Patch works of older networking systems are easier to find these days (Network 1). Starting relationships between many businesses, networks in many ways become synonymous with the groups and businesses they bring together (Network 1). Business employees, customers, and business partners would have available access to their information stored in network systems, could get to their network systems and share them easily among themselves (“Network” 1). Computer networks give their owners speed, ability to connect, and ultimately value to their users. They give possible solutions for business difficulties and issues that would not be possible to other businesses (Network 1). Computer networking systems are required for electronic communications. (Network 1) As time moves on, businesses’ spend a ton of money on computer systems that are used to manage various functions such as accounting, human resources...
WiFi or Wireless LANs define a short-range wireless network typically used in an office or home setting that allows several users to access the network resources. IEEE 802.11 sets the standard for wireless LAN equipment and speeds and products under this standard are marketed as the WiFi brand (Certification Partners, 2012). When speeds are mentioned, it is typically in reference to the top speeds available but generally, lower speeds are the expectation. Frequency ranges are ...
