The pen is mightier than the sword, and Winston’s artistic mind is stronger than the muscles of a warrior can ever be. In the book 1984 by George Orwell, Winston lives in an oppressive society in the art-deprived world of Oceania, from which he attempts to escape. He must mentally break free from the cage in which Big Brother has trapped him and so many others. Winston lives among rats of the Party, ironically his worst fear. While living amongst some of the rodents who are forever trapped in the enslavement of Big Brother, Winston strives to remain human, to remain conscious of the harsh reality of the world in which he is confined. All artists have a purpose, a quest, a mission. For Winston this was his quest for the truth. Winston sought after the truth, always doubting the lies he was presented with by all those around him. His work, rewriting history, has allowed him to realize the fabrications of the Party, even with the plethora of lies that surrounded him, he was still knowledgeable, he was still human. O’Brien, feeding Winston even more lies, insisted that the World is no older than he or Winston are: "Nonsense. The earth is as old as we are, no older. How could it be older? Nothing exists except through human consciousness." However, Winston’s obsession with history and love for the truth allows him to fight against these heinous lies: "But the rocks are full of the bones of extinct animals – mammoths and mastodons and enormous reptiles which lived here long before man was ever heard of." (Orwell, 278). The quest for truth was too big for Winston to achieve himself, for the quest to be complete the Party had to be overthrown. Winston knew that only miraculously could the Party be defeated, but that did not stop him from hoping for a miracle. His faith lied in the spirit of Man: “Then what is it, this principle that will defeat us?” “I don 't know. The spirit of Man.” (Orwell, 282).
