Described as “ the jewel in the crown” of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, Lake Winnipesaukee is the state’s largest standing body of water, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains east of Laconia, in Belknap and Carroll counties. The lake is roughly 21 miles long and between 1 and 9 miles wide, with a surface area of approximately 72 square miles and a maximum depth of 212 feet. There are 258 islands in Lake Winnipesaukee, with a total shoreline of approximately 288 miles. This glacial, mountain lake was formed 1, 000, 000 million years ago resulting from glacial activities, that also consequently shaped the region’s beautiful landscape.
Winnipesaukee is a Native American name taken from ancient Algonquian. There are conflicting translations of the word, from “smile of the Great Spirit”; “beautiful water in a high place”; “good outlet”; and “lakes region.” It is believed to have been derived from the Native American word Wiwininebesaki, meaning "at the lake in the vicinity of which there are other lakes and ponds", or literally, "Lakes Region", from "wiwini" meaning around, in the vicinity, "nebes" ,lakes or ponds, and "aki", region or territory. The Winnipesaukee Indians lived and fished at a village called Acquadocton at the lake’s outlet.

Weskarini, an Algonquin tribe, known as Petite Nation des Algonquins (Little Nation of the Algonquin), lived on the north side of the Ottawa River below Allumettes Island (Morrison's Island), Québec, New France. They had close associations with the Jesuit missionaries.
Our name is derived by Vetromile from the Pānnawānbskek, 'it forks on the white rocks,' or Penobscot, 'it flows on rocks’. My tribe connected to the Abnaki confederacy (q. v.), closely related in language and customs to the Norridgewock. They are sometimes included in the most numerous tribe of the Abnaki confederacy, and for a time more influential than the Norridgewock. My tribe has occupied the country on both sides of Penobscot bay and river, and claimed the entire basin of Penobscot river. Our summer resort was near the sea, but during the winter and spring we inhabited lands near the falls, where we still reside today, My tribes principal modern village being called Oldtown, on Indian island, a few miles above Bangor, in Penobscot county.
The island is about 4 square miles and is today a place for tourism in the great lakes. Many thousands of years ago though this was a little piece of land with bluffs reaching high above its surroundings and was a merely a small piece of land surrounded by water. It was because of these bluffs the appearance of the island resembled a turtle and led to it being named “The Great Turtle” (Piljac, 1998). Currently the island reaches several hundred feet above the lake and it’s because of this geography that many nations saw this as a perfect military post and would be used over and over again throughout its history as such.
Have you ever heard of the Powhatan tribe? If not, let me share a little fact about them. Powhatan means “waterfall” in the Virginia Algonquian language. The Powhatans didn't live in tepees. They lived in small roundhouses called wigwams, or in larger Iroquois-style longhouses.
The Lenape tribe is tribal community now mostly known as the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Delaware Nation. They were also called Lenni Lenape. In their native language Lenni means genuine or real while Lenape means Indian or people (Waldman). The Lenape language was originally taken from an Algonquian language. However, the Lenape language was wiped out and currently there are very few Lenape Indians that are capable of speaking their native language fluently. There are currently very few Lenape Indians and most are located in Canada and parts of the United States. They were branched into several different clans. They lived mostly near rivers and were divided into three major clans. The first clan was the tukwsi-t or the wolf the second was the pukuwanku or the turtle and pele' which translates to turkey (Waldman). For thousands of years they lived peaceful lives and survived off of planting and hunting. Women were strongly valued in this tribe therefore they followed a matrilineal system. Everyone in the tribe had specific roles even the children. As the first European explorers arrived the tribe’s life shifted drastically. For the Lenape tribe the 1700s was a devastating time.

"The Long Island Sound is a national treasure, to be prized for its beauty, abundant and diverse resources, and recreational and commercial opportunities" (Long Island Sound Study). It is true that for many of the residents of the area the Long Island Sound is a source of inspiration and renewal. The Sound is widely believed to be the most substantial natural component adding to the beauty of the entire island. The Long Island Sound provides more then just beautiful scenery, but crucial natural elements that aide both human and animal residents. Despite all that the sound provides, it suffers many of the same problems as most natural features, pollution. The sound is a crucial part in maintaining the quality of life on Long Island, so its protection, preservation, and restoration are imperative.
The Iroquois had very strong beliefs and traditions centered around war. They create art on their longhouses and they also paint faces to represent a war. They believed the paint held magical powers for protection, and made them more ferocious. They believed that their spirits would help them get through war and help them become ferocious so other tribes would be fearful of them. The Iroquois were made up of six nations, meaning they spread or expanded throughout the region. The nations were Oattwa, Mipissing, Algonquin, Malisect, Mi’kmay and Abenaki. All six nations were spread out and were hard to find. However, the Ottawa nation could be found in Ontario. They also had a different name before they were called the Iroquois. They were called Agunchion, which meant that they were “the builders”. The name was picked due to the way they constructed their houses. The Iroquois actually built them from scratch with the resources around them. As you can see the Iroquois have many differences from the Haida and Inuit tribes.

In this article Winckelmann states that the good taste in art that is present in contemporary works stems from the work of the ancient Greeks. The beauty in the modern works of artists like Raphael (especially his Madonna and child with St Sixtus and St Barbara) hold such beauty, complexity of emotion, and good taste because he draws on the ideas set up by the great ancient sculptures and society in which they lived and drew inspiration from. Winckelmann categorizes the ancients greatness into two main ideas that are necessary for contemporaries to draw from in order to reach greatness: Natural beauty and noble simplicity and quiet grandeur.
This tribe is ever flowing and changing, this can be seen in the fact that they moved constantly but also their original name. The Osage were originally known as Ni-u-ko’n-ska and that means “children of the middle waters”. Their name later changed to Wah-Zha-Zhi which was translated by French explorers, who had come to America, and was later the English word Osage (Brief History). The Osage got this name because initially their territory ranged from between the Arkansas River to the Mississippi River and then up along both sides of the Ohio River up into Pennsylvania.
In the native language of the Shawnee people, Algonquian, the name of the tribe means “Southerner”. Long ago, the region that now includes New York State was populated by the Native Americans. Several Native American tribes like the Iroquois populated the southeastern part of present-day state. Many of the region’s Native Americans hunted, fished, and gathered their food. The hunting was done by the men of the community while women farmed and elected the leaders. The Iroquois tribe lived in longhouses. They often referred to themselves as the Haudenosaunee which translates to "people of the longhouse". The Iroquois often fought other Algonquian tribes which lead to many conflicts and wars. The fur trade was one of the main reasons that the Iroquois and Algonquian tribes fought. They root of their conflicts was over land, food, and trade.
