Abstract:
Due to the development of technology around the world, the need of energy is increasing every year. But, what would be the best way to produce energy without polluting the air, or depleting fossil fuels? Renewable energy would also be the best solution for this problem. Of the available sources of renewable energy, wind power shows much promise. Wind turbines have been used through many generations, and the technology continues to develop. Wind Energy provides a feasible energy alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Introduction:
The need for alternative energy is a pressing issue for countries all over the world. One of the solutions this for problem is wind power, which has been in use for many thousands years. “About 5000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River. Later, people built windmill to grind wheat and other grains. American colonists used windmill to pump water, and cut wood at sawmill. In 1920s, they started to use it to generate electricity.” (Renewable energy trends, 2005).
Besides the long known history, the ways electricity is generated through wind turbines are truly simple, too. “Turbines catch the wind's energy using blades which are mounted on a shaft. The shaft is connected, normally via a gearbox, to a generator which produces electricity. The blades and shaft are connected to the

nacelle, which contains the gearbox and other power mechanical components.” (Scottish executive, 2007). Wind turbines can be determined in two styles that based on the direction of the rotating shaft (axis). One is horizontal axis, and the other is vertical axis. (Figure 1).

These include the history of windmills and their role concerning the survival in the immense plains that range from east of the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. The rise of the economic condition of those living around the wind farms along with the surge of investments from energy companies. Finally, the promising data relating to the amount of energy produced, and the consequences they will have on the environment. In the later and longer part of the article, the possible negative results or wind farms are brought up. Primarily, the points against wind farms have to do with the conservation of wildlife. This is separated into two sections, the first addresses the dangers wind turbines present to birds, the other on the dangers presented to bats.
Wind turbines can be very useful in bringing energy into your home. They are especially useful when solar panels aren't working. They take the wind speed from oceans, lakes, dugouts, or rivers and turn it into energy. To use the wind turbines most efficiently you should set up a wind power system.
The energy produced and created by using the kinetic energy which comes from the wind naturally is known as the wind power. Wind power is the technology to catch the energy gained with movement, kinetic energy, and change this energy into electrical power which is useful in many places, such as households throughout the nation. Wind power can be produced by using a device called wind electric turbine. Several huge blades, about 30 feet long, are placed on each wind turbine. While wind passes through the blades, the wind with kinetic energy makes the blades to turn. The movement of blades makes a shaft inside the turbine to be in motion as well with the same velocity of the blades. This work turns the kinetic energy into rotational energy which will be stored into a generator located at the bottom of the turbine. After the rotational energy is kept in the generator, this energy is changed into electrical energy. Finally, the electrical energy is removed into the electrical plant for storage by the power lines until the communities are in need of energy.
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, wind power was used by the Europeans as a significant source of energy for. As time passed, use of wind as energy lost favor because it was not always available when it was needed, and it was difficult to distribute. “The first wind turbines for electricity generation appeared in the late nineteenth century in the United States.” “Modern wind turbines are several hundred feet tall.” For example, “a wind turbine that generates 1.6 mega-walls of electrical power is approximately 113 meters tall from its base to the tip of the rotor blade.”
Global warming is a big factor in today’s society. It is an impressive example of energy innovation, and yet one of these mammoth wind towers provides clean, renewable energy by a simple mechanical feat -- the spinning turbines turn a generator that provides power for hundreds of homes. Wind energy has been utilized for hundreds of years. Such a simple technology and source of energy has always been around, and has been used slightly, but never to its full potential. Only recently have people been discovering and engineering ways to utilize the great, natural, free source of energy that the universe gives us. Renewable, safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly sources of energy are becoming more and more important in such an, already, physically damaged world that we live in. It is becoming a household debate, and a debate in which many world leaders are taking notice and action towards.
Ever since recorded history, people had the ability to use wind as a source of energy. Wind power was been used to propel boats along rivers as early as 5000 B.C. At 200 B.C., China used windmills to pump water, while in Persia and the Middle East used vertical-axis windmills with woven reed sails were grinding grain. (history-wind-energy, energy.gov) Eventually, discoveries for wind energy became vast. Plethora of ideas developed. During the 11th century, the Middle Easterners used the windmills for food production. Which then allowed nomads, merchants, and crusaders to further bring back the idea back to Europe. The Dutch further improved the windmill by making it for draining lakes and marshes in rivers. Settlers took this advanced technology to the New World, and began using the windmills to pump water for farms and ranches and much more. Then eventually, to generate electricity, for homes and industries and soon to become, wind turbines.
“A wind turbine is a machine for converting the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy”. (1) The inventor of the first electric wind turbine was Clevelander Charles Brush, who ran his entire Euclid Avenue mansion off of one for 20 years, which later made the cover of Scientific American in 1888. (2) Although the use of alternate energy didn't rise a great deal afterward, this event did open the eyes for many environmentalists. Wind power is only one of our several “energy source[s] whose ‘fuel’ is free and will never be exhausted” (3) with the pros and cons not completely weighed out as to whether it will be truly beneficial or not. The two main issues regarding wind turbines are the environmental effects that they have and the cost effectiveness of building them.
The design of the windmill has also transformed. Earlier designs were called vertical axis. A vertical axis windmill is one that stands vertically with the panels rotating in a horizontal motion. Overtime, it changed to a horizontal axis windmill. A horizontal windmill stands up and the panels move in the direction of the wind. Overtime a horizontal axis windmill proved to be more efficient than vertical axis windmills.
Now-a-days the handling of “Electricity” has been increased rapidly. Due to this the “Fossil Fuels” are getting extinguished day-to-day. So we need to choose for an alternate source of energy that is Renewable Source. Among the Renewable Sources “Wind Energy” is one of them.
Energy is used everyday, in different ways. As time passes by, non-renewable energy sources are running out slowly. They are becoming harder to find, so these non-renewable resources are becoming more expensive. What will happen if these resources ran out? Since these resources are running out, such as oil or fossil fuels, people are finding ways to make renewable energy resources. Wind power is great to be used instead of fossil fuels. A suggestion would be wind power. It should be used more, since it is cleaner, cheaper, plentiful, free, produces no waste, and requires little land.
Wind turbines are a great source of energy around the world. Wind turbines produce wind energy that can be used to power our homes. Wind turbines convert kinetic energy into mechanical power. Then this mechanical power gets generated into electricity. Wind turbines make energy by the wind turning the large blades, which spin a shaft that is connected to the large blades, which then operates the generator making electricity.
Wind is a clean and renewable source of energy. Because of this modern wind turbines are being installed all over the globe in hopes of lessening the need of non-renewable energy such as the burning of fossil fuels.

The speed of the turbine affects the amount of energy that is produced. As the turbine moves faster, more energy is produced. About 1.5% of the world’s energy is derived from wind power, but that number is expected to increase in the future (Frater, “Top 10 Renewable Energy Sources”). Wind power turbines that are placed in large open areas have the least environmental impact. An example of a wind power farm would be the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm in Riverside County, California.

Wind turbines convert mechanical energy from the wind into electrical power. Wind turbines usually have three main parts. There are blades that connect to a central hub, a box behind the blades that contains the generator, and a long stem that connects to the ground. The way how it works is that the wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft that connects to a generator making electricity. After the electricity is produced it is sent through transmission lines to a substation that is sent to business and homes. For the sake of our planet, we must promote a renewable energy economy. Wind power can be a foundation of that sustainable energy future because it provides jobs in states that are building wind turbines, is a renewable energy source, and does not damage our environment. The environment will not be damaged by the pollution, the natural resources will not be used up, and there won’t be generating of hazardous wastes. Welcoming wind energy today will lay the foundation for a healthy tomorrow that will affect everyone in the United States. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
