When I was little my phobia was clowns.Every Time I saw a clown I would freak out. Once when i went trick or treating with my cousins, then out of nowhere a clown came out with a chainsaw it started chasing us. Unfortunately I was never able to overcome my fear of clowns.
In “The Elevator” by William Sleator Martin has just moved to a apartment with his dad. Martin lives in the 17th floor which means he has to take the elevator which he is scared of. He also comes across a fat lady that creeps him out. William Sleator shows us Martin’s lack of ability to get over his fears by building suspense through Martin’s thoughts and actions which are all efforts to avoid these fears. He is treated unfairly by the fire chief, the police, father, lawyers, and the rest of the town after an innocedent that was ultimately out of his control in chapter 22. When he went to the police for help, "He took Coalhouse aside. Listen, he said, we'll push your tin lizzie back on the road and you be on your way. There's no real damage. Scrape off the shit and forget the whole thing." After this Coalhouse was arrested when he became angry about the situation. Upon finally reaching his home, he is baffled that there are no lights on and the door is locked. When he peers through the windows, the house is empty. The finality of this fact reveals that he has progressed from the suburban life to the muddled old age and emptiness, his misfortunes are real and have caught up with him. No longer can he deny the painful memories of what has occurred in his life through his journey. The semi-surrealism of this journey can in theory be a progression of his life, his mind having gone from clarity of a midsummer's day to the darkness of approaching night and old age, with its frailties and troubles, his lapse of memories coming to clarity in the end.

What is fear? Is it being in a prison so dark a person can not see in front of them? In this complete darkness the narrator finds himself eating and drinking, then passing out on a cold floor. When he wakes he is somewhere else in the dark cell. Or is it a cell? Could it be a tomb? Just when he thinks the cell is so big he finds himself almost falling into a pit. He eats and sleeps again. Where or how will he wake? Does he wake from his drugged food? The producer was aiming to create mystery and fear. The dark of the night and the description of the house as feeling dead in the protagonist’s narration sets a suspenseful scene filled with fear and tension. The young girl is followed by the camera as she explores the mansion. When entering the room suspected to be that of her aunts the camera leaves her side to pan around the room. The darkness doesn’t reveal everything but one becomes aware of a search. The revelation of little secrets leaves the viewer with many questions. The room is familiar to the protagonist as she finds items symbolic to her and familiar photographs. This familiarity however does not retract from suspicions that something sinister has been hidden. The producer has successfully captivated the viewer. The protagonist is being followed throughout the scene and has thus allowed for the viewer to bond with them. They are engaging with the audience through narration and have in return enticed the viewer to follow them along their journey. One feels nervous for the young girl however through tension in the scene one does not want them to discontinue the journey as too many questions have been left unanswered.
