Would you have known that a famous guerilla fighter had a really bad habit of gambling (sussle.org)? That is true of William Quantrill. He is better known as a confederate guerrilla fighter who committed a lot of crimes, had a good side by being a school teacher, and his death was overshadowed by Lincoln’s assassination.
William Clark Quantrill was born on July 31, 1837, in Dover, Ohio. Quantrill is the oldest child of Caroline Cornella Clark and Thomas Henry Quantrill. His parents got married on October 11, 1836. His father passed away from tuberculosis when Quantrill was sixteen. When his father passed away he left his family in debt. Quantrill didn’t go to regular school, but he taught himself. After he taught himself he became a school teacher when he was sixteen (sussle.org).
Later, Quantrill met Sarah Katherine King. He married Sarah King who was thirteen at the time in 1861 on the King’s family farm in Blue Springs, Missouri. At the time of his death, he had no children with Sara (sussle.org).
He continued his teaching career until his school burned down. Then, he started a criminal career and became a gang leader. He formed his gang called The Quantrill Raiders named after himself. The James brothers and Bill (Bloody Bill) Anderson were a couple of the famous henchmen of the Quantrill Raiders. William Quantrill was a strong, bold leader that used guerilla warfare tactics against the union soldiers (sussle.org). The Quantrill Raiders roamed only in the midwest during The Civil War. Then, they tried to murder U.S. Senator James Lane, burned Lawrence, Kansas down, and they murdered nearly 200 men and boys on August 21, 1863 (pbs.org). William Quantrill’s criminal career lasted until his death (sussle.org). William Quantrill was really tall in the 1800s, he was five foot nine inches tall. Quantrill eyes' were steel-blue like the sky. Quantrill decided he wanted to change his clean shaven face, so he decided to grow a mustache. He had reddish hair.(historynet.com). Quantrill was shot in his head by a union soldier (sussle.org). Next, he was transported to a military prison in Louisville, Kentucky where he died on June 6, 1865, at the age of 27. Quantrill was buried in three places, most of his body was buried in Louisville National Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. His skull was buried in his birth city of Dover, Ohio, and an arm and a shin bone were buried in Higginsville, Missouri. A big mystery surrounded his death because someone who looked liked Quantrill was murdered in Fort Worth, Texas in 1907. Before the person got murder, he stated that he was Quantrill. He escaped the military prison, after he recovered, and then fled to Fort Worth, Texas (historynet.com). There were twenty books, and one book was titled Bloody Bill Anderson and was published in 2002 by Larry Wood.
Another book was titled Guerrillas and Other Curiosities Independence was published in 2004 by Samuel Pence (wcqsociety.com). There are four movies that were made of his life. The titles are Kansas Raiders made in 1950 and another one is The Quantrill Raiders made in 1954 (historyonfilm.com).
