Look around and what do you see? You see letters forming creative words on this page, on TV and magazines. These letters form words which can be read in such a particular way. The typography behind the design seeks for the readers attention. The typography in design is the unique personality that identifies the product or advertisement, similar to fashion. Typography visually gives more to the idea behind the design. It is a way to call out and be heard without making a sound. It combines elements in new ways with different themes and ideas. The idea of typography has not changed since it was first created. The late seventieth century and early eighteenth century, type designers work was laborious and they had very little appreciation. Typography was a craft that evolved from handwritten letterforms that would be printed on a page. Time and dedication was needed to create such fine work. Typefaces needed to be readable, coherent, visually appealing and unique. Type was created by cutting punches into metal sheets in order to create just one letter. Punching and designing intricate type was a tedious job. Plenty of type designers made a living this way. In England, a new type designer would become so popular that his typefaces are still used to this day. William Caslon was influenced by all different types, but he designed one typeface that changed the world during the time period. Named after himself, Caslon typeface stormed Europe and the United States. Working for many years as an apprentice, he gained the knowledge and ideas from engraving guns. ... design. Past typographers in the seventieth and eighteenth century were not respected and appreciated. Their hard work has inspired many and without it typography would not be where it is today. William Caslon’s hard work and dedication to creating a new typeface changed the design world and will continue to influence printed work in the future.

By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. William Tyndale has been called “the hidden father of the English language.” He was the first person to translate the Bible into the English, and in doing so, he changed the English language forever. Before Tyndale’s translation some English words had three different spelling. Tyndale helped to formalize both the spellings and speech patterns of different words and phrases. Tyndale spoke seven different languages, and he was proficient in both Hebrew and Greek. He was a priest who worked his whole life mastering his intellectual gifts and making use of them. Tyndale was disciplined and efficient. He could have went a long way in the church had he not worked so hard to defy the current authority, but he did all of this to make sure men and women were able to read the Bible in their own language. Tyndale translated all of the New Testament and most of the Old Testament. His translation paved the way for the publishing of the Geneva Bible in 1560, which became the main Bible used throughout Britain into the 17th century. In William Tyndale’s lifetime, access to the Bible was severely limited. The Church only approved the Latin Vulgate Bible, so even when someone did obtain a Bible they were usually unable to read it. Therefore, the Bible became a divider between the Church and the Reformers who advocated for more access to the Bible. Tyndale leaves both Christians and English speakers with a legacy of defying authority in order to spread God’s word. He is the perfect example of sacrificing oneself to live a life fully dedicated to God and His ministry.

Graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister has always had a unique way of viewing the world, therefore has created designs that are both inventive and controversial. He is an Austrian designer, who works in New York but draws his design inspiration while traveling all over the world. While a sense of humor consistently appears in his designs as a frequent motif, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work. He has created projects in the most diverse and extreme of ways as a form of expression. This report will analyse three of Stefan’s most influential designs, including the motives and messages behind each piece.

Throughout history, writing has had many various uses that have helped record information from history to the present day. Writing has obtained many different uses as to how and what we use writing today. When writing was formed in 3200 B.C. it was used to record and communicate. We have since then used writing for numerous issues such as recording information in which we may learn about the past, and for poetry or literature for people, both children and adults, to read and learn from. People throughout history and today even use writing for religious reasons such as writing out a prayer to God or even taking note on what has happened or talked of in the sermon.

This paper will argue that the industrial revolution allowed for the proliferation of fonts in the 19th century for two main reasons. First, there was an unprecedented need for new and eye-catching lettering to grab the attention of consumers a new variety of choices on the market. Secondly, the creation of new fonts was more affordable than ever due to the advancements in technology during the industrial revolution.

Stone Serif, created by Sumner Stone, is a typeface with an unmatched ability to be used on a variety of outputs, from small sizes on economical, everyday printers, to imagesetters used for high quality printing of glossy magazines or newsletters. This typeface, which a part of a larger type family, or a “super family,” is classified as a serif typeface. Prior to its creation in 1987 at Adobe Systems, personal computers were slowly, but surely, becoming more mainstream. With this booming invention, the first glimpse at the desire for typography became apparent, and Sumner Stone was in the right place. Stone, a previous Hallmark card lettering artist, eventually landed a career in Adobe Systems, leading to him becoming the first Director of Typography in the company.
