Wilfred Owen's 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' was an anti war poem that displayed Owen's strong feelings of sadness, fear and anger towards the propaganda, hypocritical establishment and the act of war itself. This poem was written for those who were not aware of what really happened behind the romanticized propaganda of WW1. The words “Dulce Et Decorum Est” translate to ‘it is sweet and fitting to die for your country’. Owen stated this quote as ‘the old lie’ as he had experienced war first hand and knew that it was certainly not a ‘sweet’ and ‘fitting’ experience.
