Why We Should Stop Standardized Testing
ST (standerdized Tests) Are something every kid in the country Has to do every year. They are supposed to measure how well were doing in school and if we can pass that grade. These test are not accurate in the slightest and we really shouldn't do them heres why.
You can not measure a kids learning or a teachers teaching on a ST, Because the School might not of had enough time to study most of the subjects and all the kids could fail there tests and that will pull down the rating of the school and the state and the country so its important that the students at least have enough time to learn about everything on the test or its just no correct the way that we are viewed.
ST are not easy for
kids that do not read english for example hispanics. they can pick up tiny words if they have moved from Mexico or if they have grown up in a environment were everyone had spoke Spanish . Then the kids have a huge Disadvantage Then the other side they cant even understand the question. The questions on ST are hard to understand they word them in a weird way and the way they word them you cant even understand it when you read it out aloud. And if they cant understand the question they will probably end up guessing it and getting it wrong. And when that happens we just go back to the measurements and that ends up hurting the country scores. Bottom line i believe that ST should stop because they don't help us if anything they hurt us and they give us questions we don't understand and we didn't learn some of the subjects that are on the test we didn't even get a chance to learn before the standerdised test. Its not our faults we don't have enough time to learn about our subjects so Thats why standardized tests should stop. Standardized tests, such as the SAT and the SOL, have been implemented for many years now for individuals in grade school to take. The SOL’s, or Standards of Learning tests, are Virginia’s version of standardized tests that students are required to take in order to pass a class, evaluating their knowledge on a specific subject. SOL’s are mandatory for students to take as soon as they reach third grade. Additionally, the SAT is a test taken in the final years of high school that colleges look at when comparing students for post-secondary school. Since the release of the report by Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in December of 2010 many in the government and community are searching for ways to reform the American education system to give American students the greatest opportunity to succeed. According to the report, American students are not testing as high as other nations in the world (Duncan, 2010). There are many contributing elements that have brought America to her knees in the education system, however, the obsession with standardized testing is found to be one of the most influential downfalls.
How standardized are standardized tests? In America, we strive to perfect them as well as give our students an education they deserve but at what cost? Standardized tests have been the easiest way to ultimately evaluate a student against every other student in America. However, standardized tests are not as great as they are made out to be. We need to take a step back and look at the faults of standardized tests. Quite simply: Standardized tests are not standardized.
Throughout the United States standardized testing is a popular way that educators measure a student’s academic ability. Although it may seem like a good idea to give a bunch of students the same test and see how each one does, it is not that simple. The results do not represent how smart a student is or a student's potential to do great things in the real world. In taking a standardized test one student may have a greater advantage over another for many reasons. Reasons that are not shown in the standardized test score.
Standardized testing assesses students, teachers, and the school itself, which puts a great deal of pressure on the students. High scores show that the school is effective in teaching students, while low test scores make teachers and schools look as though they are not teaching the students properly. This is not always the case. There are teachers who do teach students what they need to know to pass the test, but their students are still unprepared. Although teachers try to improve instruction, student performance is still variable to other factors that the school cannot control.
Standardized testing scores proficiencies in most generally accepted curricular areas. The margin of error is too great to call this method effective. “High test scores are generally related to things other than the actual quality of education students are receiving” (Kohn 7). “Only recently have test scores been published in the news-paper and used as the primary criteria for judging children, teachers, and schools.”(2) Standardized testing is a great travesty imposed upon the American Public School system.
Argument Against Standardized Testing President Bush is promoting annual standardized testing for all students in grades three through eight. This bill is currently being considered in Congress, and has garnered much support. As of right now, 15 states test students in those grades, and more than 20 have high school exit exams, which look only at the test score of a student, not at his or her academic achievements. Standardized testing is an unfair and inaccurate form of judging a person’s intellect. In many cases, people are either over- or underrepresented by their test scores, partly because America does not currently have the capabilities to fairly score the increasing number of tests.
In the United States of America, Standardized testing has become a way of life for students and children, especially in public schools. Many argue that standardized testing does not measure the students as a whole, takes up valuable classroom time, and creates drastic mental health problems in students and teachers. In recent years, a controversy surrounding the idea of standardized testing has been brought forth as something that needs to be changed or adapted to the growing needs of today’s students and this can be examined when exploring the negative effects, the testing has had on society’s future.
Imagine learning all the lessons you needed to learn during the school year. Than by the end of the year that Standardized Test comes around and everyone gets nervous. When you thoroughly think the test through you think it will be easy because you learned everything that you needed to know for that school year. But when the test comes out and you take it you know basically a majority of the answers but then there's about 20 questions about topics you haven't learned and you're forced to know them at that point. This kind of situation is normal for all students. If you ask a student if they like taking standardized testing 9/10 would say they don't like it. It is a serious problem with having to take these state tests, with some of the questions based around something you have never heard of or a topic you've never heard of. Schools should ban standardized testing. Standardized testing should be banned in schools because their is way more students failing the tests compared to maybe one percent of students
When speaking about having test scores as an indication of a school’s competency, everything will be based on the school. The school will have to have something to base it on themselves in order to have the results. This is where it becomes unacceptable.
