According to Desmond Tutu, “To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice.” The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is given to people who have committed acts of murder or other serious crimes. It is believed to be a just punishment for their crimes. Thirty two states allow the death penalty. Since 1976, 1,465 people have been executed, and there alone has been 23 executions in 2017 (executions-year). Many people think the death penalty is necessary. However, there shouldn’t be a death penalty because some people who are being executed shouldn’t be executed, it is immoral, and it is very expensive. On the contrary, many people, such as David Muhlhausen PhD, believe some crimes are so wrong that they demand strict penalties (10 Pro and Con Arguments). However, the death penalty results in mentally ill people and innocent people being executed. Therefore, even one life innocently destroyed is not worth a thousand guilty people going to the chair. People who shouldn’t be executed are being executed because of the death penalty. Moreover, there shouldn’t be a death penalty because it is immoral. Only God should create and destroy life. The sixth commandment “Thou shalt not kill,” specifically says that it is wrong to kill. By fulfilling the death penalty, we are breaking this commandment and disobeying God. Also, executing people isn’t morally right and destroys human life. In contrast, people who are in favor of the death penalty use the words of the Bible in their defense; Genesis 6:9 says "whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed" (Capital Punishment).
