Many people support the death penalty, while others wish for the death penalty to be abolished, and there are some that support the death penalty, but only in certain cases. My personal opinion on the death penalty is it should be administered only in cases of particularly …show more content…
Imagine, a good friend of yours. Better yet, imagine a loved one, perhaps a little brother or sister or son or daughter. Now try to imagine life without them, simply because the murderer thought that he was above the law. Who knows, maybe he or she was just bored and decided to take a life. What if someone took the life of your child or loved one? What are we to do about the person(s), such as these murderers who decide that they can take a loved one's life. Obviously, anyone who takes one's life, other than self defense, should not ever be let out into everyday society to function in everyday life, because such as this are from normal. Those that prey on the weak will always prey on them. A majority of those convicted and sentenced to capital punishment were "repeat offenders that continually prey on the weak and …show more content…
Punishment, when speaking on serious terms, is socially valuable because it deters criminals from repeating their crimes and may keep others from repeating the same acts. If in fact the deterring effect misses its point, it is the fault of the justice system the all the red tape found behind it. At its current standing, the system is viewed as a joke because no authority is taken, no one believes, let alone fears, the system. Both the lengthy time and the high expense result from innumerable appeals, including many technicalities which have little nothing to do with the question of guilt or innocence. If these wasteless amount of appeals were eliminated or at least controlled, then the procedure would be much shorter, less expensive and more
"Capital punishment is a term which indicates muddled thinking." George Bernard Shaw The "muddled thinking" that Shaw speaks of is the thinking that perpetuates the controversy over capital punishment in the United States today. The impractical concurrence of a theoretical, moral argument and definite, legal application has left all sides in this controversy dissatisfied with the ultimate handling of the issue. There are legitimate ethical and empirical considerations that stand on both the side that favors and on the side that opposes the death penalty. The general incompatibility of these considerations renders them irreconcilable. It is within this condition of irreconcilability that the government must initiate and implement its policies regarding capital punishment. This fixed condition has led to the necessity for and creation of comprises between both sites of this debate, attempting to synthesize the considerations of the two. The contentious issue of the capital punishment was rekindled in the 1970s when, in 1976, the Supreme reinstated the practice after a four-year hiatus. The arguments that comprise much of the legal debate on the issue stem from the eighth and fourteenth amendments to the United States Constitution. The eighth reads, "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." 1
The death penalty is a very heavily debated upon topic, especially in the US. I am against capital punishment because it is expensive, targets minorities, and is abused in certain states. There are many alternatives that are less expensive and can keep innocent people from being executed for crimes they didn’t
During the spring semester I read Evangelium Vitae: The Gospel of Life. Paragraphs 27 and 56 of this encyclical prompted a discussion of the death penalty with other students. Their first reaction was that the Pope was against it and that he was saying that the penalty has no justification. There was general resistance to the suggestion that while the Pope's attitude toward the death penalty is, to put it mildly, unfavorable, he did not flat out say that it was immoral, wrong, without justification.
The death penalty has been around for decades along with the argument of whether it is moral or not. After all these years people who supported it, are now against it. The death penalty has really opened up people’s eyes recently, with all of the falsely accused being put on death row. I think the death penalty should be abolished, because it is bad for an economy, not always accurate, and morally wrong.
The death penalty is mainly known by capital punishment. It is a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. The judicial degree that someone be punished in this manner is a death sentence. The actual process of killing someone is an execution. Capital punishment has in the past been practiced by most societies. Currently fifty eight nations actively practice it and ninety seven countries have abolished it. Capital punishment is a matter of active controversy in various countries and states. Positions can vary within single political ideology or cultural region. I am for the death penalty. With the death penalty it allows there to be equal punishment among criminals, and it brings about peace of mind to everyone.
The death penalty has been an issue of debate for several years. Whether or not we should murder murderer’s and basically commit the same crime that they are being killed for committing. People against the death penalty say that we should not use it for that very reason. They also make claims that innocent people who were wrongly convicted could be killed. Other claims include it not working as a deterrent, it being morally wrong, and that it discriminates.
Capital punishment has been a controversial topic in association to any person condemned to a serious committed crime. Capital punishment has been a historical punishment for any cruel crime. Issues associated to things such as the different methods used for execution in most states, waste of taxpayers’ money by performing execution, and how it does not serve as any form of justice have been a big argument that raise many eyebrows. Capital punishment is still an active form of deterrence in the United States. The history of the death penalty explains the different statistics about capital punishment and provides credible information as to why the form of punishment should be abolished by every state. It is believed
The death penalty honors human dignity by treating the defendant as a moral able to control his/her own destiny for good or bad behavior. I believe it is an asset to society. The death penalty should not be abolished because it will reduce crime rate, it will save us and the government money, and It helps our society.
Many people say that the death penalty is wrong and crucial. The death penalty is a discipline of death. I support the death penalty in many different ways. First of all, I think that if you kill someone you should be killed for the safety of others. Another reason I support the death penalty is because I don’t think going to jail for a crime is a punishment. Lastly, the death penalty honors God.
Crime is everywhere. Wherever we look, we find criminals and crime. Criminals have become a part of our daily lives. Does this mean we let them be the darkness of our society? No, definitely not. Eliminating crime and criminals is our duty, and we cannot ignore it. Getting the rightly accused to a just punishment is very important. Some criminals commit a crime because they have no other option to survive, but some do it for fun. I do not advocate death penalty for everybody. A person, who stole bread from a grocery store, definitely does not deserve death penalty. However, a serial killer, who kills people for fun or for his personal gain, definitely deserves death penalty. Death penalty should continue in order to eliminate the garbage of our society. Not everybody deserves to die, but some people definitely do. I support death penalty because of several reasons. Firstly, I believe that death penalty serves as a deterrent and helps in reducing crime. Secondly, it is true that death penalty is irreversible, but it is hard to kill a wrongly convicted person due to the several chances given to the convicted to prove his innocence. Thirdly, death penalty assures safety of the society by eliminating these criminals. Finally, I believe in "lex tallionis" - a life for a life.
The death penalty is a controversial subject, just as is abortion is a difficult topic as well to discuss. People are most likely not going to change their opinion based on others opinions. The issue with the death penalty is that innocent lives are sometimes taken due to being granted guilty when innocent. As stated by the newsletter The Guardian, “At least 4.1% of all defendants sentenced to death in the US in the modern era are innocent, according to the first major study to attempt to calculate how often states get it wrong in their wielding of the ultimate punishment.” The death penalty is geared towards those that have committed a crime, so why should the state be so quickly to accuse an innocent person as guilty due to evidence that fits the defendant’s description enough to go ahead and make him guilty. Some say that race plays a role in the death penalty process, “In 1990 a report from the General Accounting Office concluded that "in 82 percent of the studies [reviewed], race of the victim was found to influence the likelihood of being charged with capital murder or receiving the death penalty, i.e. those who murdered whites were more likely to be sentenced to death than those who murdered blacks (Death Penalty Focus).”
The death penalty is as controversial topic in the United States because some people see it as an inhumane punishment and it has caused a lot of problem in the past century. The death penalty is the punishment of execution, administered to someone convicted of capital crime ( Death Penalty Law & Legal Definition). There are many different ways of executing a criminal which is why the price may vary. Many states' use the lethal injection method. More than half of the United States' states have the death penalty. The death penalty causes many problems like an economic drain, the innocence of people is at jeopardy and a lot of time is wasted. All in which support that the death penalty is not the best strategy. Compared to other strategies of punishment, death penalty cases cost three times more than life without parole, therefore, the death penalty is not worth its' cost or time(Death Penalty Info).
I was a firm believer in the death penalty when I was younger. Not fully understanding the severity and backlash that comes with it. I actually believed that lethal injection was a privileged way of dying for some crimes. I even supported the harsher punishments such as stoning or execution by firing squad. I use to think an eye for an eye. I felt that way from the pain of losing someone. As I grew older and became more open minded and seeing the world around me I oppose the death penalty. I feel the way I do for what may be common reasons, but also for reasons that might be less common. We are taught to think do people deserve to die for the crimes they’ve committed, but the real question is do we deserve to kill?
For many years it has been debated whether or not the death penalty should be served to inmates, like every argument there are two sides to it. People believe it should be completely be banned seeing it as a cruel punishment and morally unacceptable and there are the people who believe in “an eye for an eye” the two major parties in the United States Republican and Democratic parties have both shown an opposition for this punishment. If the two major parties oppose the issue why is it still being used in the country? That is the question many people are asking. For many people the death penalty is morally unacceptable and a very cruel form of punishment, these people sees life as something valuable. No matter what you believe in and what the person who is being executed did they believe it is wrong for them to receive this punishment that it would be better if the person received life in prison without the chance of parole, because what is life being locked up 24 hours a day anyways . A question commonly asked by the people against it is “what gives another human the right to decide...
In the study involved in this essay, we consider the medical perspectives on capital punishment, beginning with our own country and then viewing them in other countries where medical developments have recently occurred regarding the death penalty.
