Many college students do not revise their writing assignments before they are due. College students are not revising their assignments, so they are not turning in their best work. One in five college students do not revise. Students usually just add more information without moving or deleting any unnecessary details. Many college student do not revise they just reword their writing. However, when college students are revising they have to do more than just reword. When college students are revising they have reread and rewrite. Therefore, college students should revise because they can make important changes to their writing.
When college students make changes to their writing they are revising. Students add, delete and move ideas or sentences they are revising. For instance, when I am revising I make sure I add closing sentences to all of my body paragraphs. In other words, moving and adding ideas help college students organize their thoughts. In addition, students are constantly revising to make their writing better. According to L. Lennie Irvin good writers have to revise because, “polished writing take lots of revision” (5). More simply, if students want to improve their writing they have to revise multiple times. In fact, when students are revising they are constantly adding, moving and deleting information to make their writing flawless. Another revision technique that was suggested was “sentence outlining” which involves summarizing each paragraph of a writing into one overarching sentence in order to improve the cohesion of the piece (Harris 450). Introducing these techniques can allow readers to utilize revision in their own writing and form their own stance on its effectiveness. With revising the conclusion of a piece, Harris’ advise is to look ahead rather than to rephrase what has already been stated (Harris 454). Revision is expected to extend beyond the piece.

Citing studies and opinions from esteemed professionals, Downs & Wardle state their points and illuminate the problem in today’s many colleges.

Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Similar to my “one and done” mentality, my lack of revision on my writing pieces is because of meer laziness. Revision is in fact very important because it offers you the chance to look at your writing pieces from a critical perspective. It allows you to analyze all of your points and change anything that needs to be changed for the better. In Shitty First Drafts, I like how Anne Lamott describes this process as dental work. She says, “check every tooth, to see if it 's loose or cramped or decayed, or even, God help us, healthy”. This sums up revision in an very alternative and pictorial way. Lamott and Shirley Rose would see eye to eye in the subject of revision because in All Writers Have More To Learn, Rose discusses what I conveyed to be a form of revising called Externalization. Rose states that Externalization allows the writer to see how clearly it reads, what it is conveying, and if it can be improved in any way. Throughout college everyone will be asked to write multiple academic essays regardless of their major. We have read two sources in class that have helped clear up some common myths and also helped make academic writing not seem so foreign. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
Improving writing skills is critical to the college student’s success across all academic disciplines. Writing has become the key to survival in many fields of study. (Pirš1, Pirš1, & Kesié, 2011) There are several strategies to become an effective college-level writer. An important strategy for a writer is project management. Next, writing with a purpose is an essential step. Another crucial guideline is following the mechanics of writing. Finally, utilizing online resources provides the writer invaluable knowledge and references.
