Why Viva La Vida should be studied in an English 1102 Class The song “Viva La Vida”, written and performed by Coldplay, should be studied in an English 1102 class because it utilizes several poetic devices. Some of the poetic devices included are allusions, symbolism, figures of speech, and voice. The voice of the poem is a persona. The singer is taking the place of King Louis the XVI, the ruler of France at the start of the French Revolution. An example of symbolism in “Viva La Vida” is when he references the bells of Jerusalem and the choirs of Roman Catholics in lines thirteen and fourteen. In many places both of these things are used to symbolize death. I foreshadows the king’s death. The second bit of symbolism is when he says “Just a puppet on a lonely string” (Coldplay 27). In line two he says the line “Seas would rise when I gave the word” (Coldplay) this an example of a hyperbole because no person has the ability to control the ocean.
