America deserves a good president; one who can help the country unite and grow by enforcing laws that lead the citizens to safety and peace. Over the past 235 years, our country has had about 46 presidents; some being strong leaders and others pushing away during tough times. Two strong leaders among many American citizens are George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as president. George Washington is famously known for being the first president of the USA, leading the Continental Army in victory over the British in the American Revolution, and helping create the US Constitution. This is the ability to deal effectively/make good decisions with a crisis during their presidency, like war, climate change, social change, etc. Considering these criteria, Washington proves to be a stronger president and leader. Therefore, George Washington should be considered the best President. George Washington should be considered number one because he led the Continental Army and proved that a president should handle any crisis by uniting the nation and fighting together. Before his presidency, Washington was one of Virginia's delegates. This was a group of representatives from each colony who decided to fight the British together. In May of 1775, they appointed Washington as general of the Continental Army. Since it was such a large war, this was a heavy weight on his shoulders, but General George Washington was a strong leader. Washington had already led a surprise attack, which was the beginning of the French and Indian war in 1754. During the time he led the Continental Army, he held the army together and organized the strategies to fight against the British. Before his presidency, Lincoln had always been against slavery. He had run for U.S Senate, and though he did not win, he gained recognition for his arguments against slavery. Lincoln won the 1860 election and was inaugurated as president in March of 1861. The southern states did not want Lincoln to be president because they strongly disagreed with his policies. Before he was officially in office, they began to govern themselves and revolt from the national government. Soon six more states followed and together they formed a new country called the Confederacy.This all happened after Lincoln won the election.The Civil war began during Lincoln’s presidency on April 12th, 1861. Lincoln was determined to keep the states together as a nation. Lincoln asked for an army from the northern states to fight as the “union” to defeat the south. But this war was not an easy one, though it was much smaller than the American Revolution, it was the bloodiest battle in American history. The war lasted four years, where nearly 600,000 Americans lost their lives. Lincoln faced all sorts of struggles and obstacles during the war, but in the end, he thankfully managed to hold the country together as a nation.
