In today’s busy world, timesavers help us to accomplish work and academic goals much quicker. But one should be cautious when using another’s ideas. Some shortcuts such as plagiarism, can have serious repercussions.
Plagiarism
To briefly define plagiarism; it is taking credit for words (written or spoken), as well as, drawings, graphs and charts, which were not originally created by you. Plagiarism is also not giving proper credit to the person’s works you are using.
Whether you purposely or accidentally copy someone else’s work, it is still considered a form of plagiarism. Accidental plagiarism happens when one reproduces words or drawings (for example) and then forgets to give proper credit to the original source or credits the source incorrectly. …show more content…

Both types of plagiarism are considered unethical. Deliberate plagiarism could land you into legal trouble; whether it is taking credit for another company’s idea or copying a paper in college.
Academic Plagiarism
In college, students may be asked to write papers, chart information, or give thoughts and opinions on many topics. It is important to submit original work or to properly cite the original source. Plagiarism can be considered cheating and in college, the penalty for cheating can be severe.
For example, in the OCCC student handbook (a copy of this can be found on their website), it stresses the seriousness of academic plagiarism, and if plagiarism is proved, lists the consequences for such an action and the people who will be contacted to receive the report of the student’s plagiarism.
These consequences are decided by the professor, in whose class the plagiarism took place. The options range from offering the student a different assignment, to giving the student a zero final grade. All of the student’s non-plagiarized hard work for the course would be gone in an instant.
