Why People Should Not Be Allowed On College Campus

Language is ever changing, and so are the ways different generations view it. In recent years, there has been much discussion about what is acceptable or not on college campuses. Safe spaces (where people who have certain beliefs or share common characteristics can be safe from others) are starting to become ever more prominent in the world today. However, many argue that the world is getting too offended by too much, and the younger generation should learn to take a joke. We can see how this plays out on college campuses by observing the kind of entertainment that is booked; generally, these are “PG” rated acts, since colleges do not want to receive negative publicity, due to offended students. In my opinion, everyone has a right to feel comfortable with a comedic act, and not feel as though their culture, appearance, etc. is the main subject of comedy. If a comedian only seems to be able to make jokes about one subject, perhaps they should not be hired, as it seems as if they are only scrutinizing one group of people. In addition, if certain jokes are considered very harsh about another person’s culture, or even hateful, I believe it is then considered off limits. On the other hand, there is a line where one or two jokes about a group of people can be acceptable. I am not saying comedic acts should be filled with jokes regarding a specific group, but I believe college students have simply become too oversensitive to a joke here or there, as they seem to not be able to take a joke and move on. Comedians should be able to make a joke or two and move to a different subject, as this proves they have substance to their act and don’t seem to come off as spiteful. Regarding the comedian from Le Moyne, he did seem to make a few jokes about religion, but moved on. If his entire act was jokes about Christianity, he would have seemed to only be able to poke fun at one group of people, but he did indeed make other jokes. Fortunately, there were no students putting up a fight about his performance, as college comedic acts can clearly be a sensitive topic.
