The article “The Next Ruling Class: Meet the Organization Kid” by David Brooks, published by the Atlantic in 2001, presents a glistening, positive view of the merits of a select sample of young people in our society: highly privileged “millennials”. According to Brooks, these “future leaders” have lives which are highly organized, with time carefully choreographed to ensure future success in life. For example, today’s elite kids “are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-enhancing activity to the next.” Millennials don’t hang out in neighborhood parks with buddies. Instead, they “lead lives that are structured, supervised, and stuffed with enrichment.” Brooks presents an overview of the frantic fast paced lifestyle of America’s future elite, (those who will end up at prestigious schools like Princeton). A typical youth wakes up at dawn and then cycles through a mind-boggling succession of activities such as classes, study groups, volunteer work, prayer session, and exercise. These kids are so highly booked they go so far as to make appointments to socialize with one another. Millennials don’t read newspapers or follow national politics. Every fall millions of American adolescents gear up to apply for the thousands of colleges and universities across the nation. For many students this process is a simple-natural progression through a linear educational track in which no extra preparation, beyond a paper application, is required. However, for many students college preparation can begin as early as conception. Alexandria Robbins follows the stories of nine students from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland. Whitman is known for and could be summarized by a simple term in which Robbins’ book is also titled: Overachievers. The author explores the hectic nature of helicopter parenting, bureaucratic admission processes, the culture of Ivy (a term describing the upper echelon of academic institutions), unrelenting and unrealistic expectations, and the cyclonic degradation of innocent and carefree adolescent development.

From the beginning of high school, students strap on their seatbelts and prepare for one of the most vigorous races of their lives – becoming successful. With the rare occurrence of a break, kids are expected to keep on driving as fast and as powerfully as they can in order to get into a “great” college, which would be followed by graduate school and then an actual job that would make a lot of money. In American society, common values include working hard, determination, and being so productive that free time is not even a question. However, this philosophy is taking a major toll on American college and high school students. For at least 40 years, America’s future has been steadily growing unmotivated, tired, and hopeless due to the overemphasis on performing well in school. This phenomenon is appropriately expounded in William Zinsser’s “College Pressures”, which takes a look at the top four sources of tension that cause these feelings of dejection and agitation. After reading this article, I came up with a few solutions to this national problem. It is time to switch the harsh, over-encouraging green light of education to a comfortable yellow one. In order to make this ideal transition, directors of education across the country need to primarily reduce the amount of out-of-class assignments, lighten the grading system, and incorporate days in the school year that allow students to express their thoughts about school and provide useful feedback.
