A few towns nearby had stopped holding the lottery a few months back. Sure, none of them had realized what a mistake they were making when they halted the monthly ceremony, but that makes sense considering their consequences wouldn’t make an appearance for another few months. Only the very few who knew everything about the lottery and what it all entailed were aware of what was to come for those towns. Those few took this very seriously, as they should, and kept the tradition going in their communities month after month so as not to cause catastrophe. Let’s begin by clarifying what the lottery is. The lottery is an event that takes place in each town on the twenty-seventh of every month at approximately two in the afternoon. It begins with every citizen gathering around a box. In this box, there are just enough slips of paper to go around. After calling role to make sure everyone has arrived, the host begins to call each and every person up to draw a slip of paper, making sure to remind them not to look at it until everyone’s drawn. This is very detrimental to the safety of the town the people living there for many important reasons. You see the reason the Elite are to extract the blood and deposit it in vials on specific shelves is because it keeps the gods happy. Without the sacrifice that the lottery causes, the gods wouldn’t get the blood. The Elite don’t know why it keeps them happy or why they need it so badly; they just follow the orders passed down to them from generations and generations before them.
