Harriet Jacobs was born a slave in North Carolina. Throughout her whole teenage life, she was tortured by her ruthless master. Ms. Jacob’s physical and mental abuse reached such a great extent, she hid in a rat-infested room just three feet tall. My friends, the reason I am telling you all this, is because this is merely one slave. Many people have suffered events like Ms. Jacobs. Slavery has held Africans hostage for too long. These people are brutally tortured as if they are livestock. Slavery is an unjust practice unethical towards the human race; therefore it should be abolished. First, slavery is not as economic as many think it actually is. Man labor has been used for so long it only feels that this is the way to make money. Many mechanical contraptions can be planned and created to replace slaves work and become much more easier. Though Eli Whitney created the cotton gin to increase slave labor, tools like these can be used to replace picking cotton. Another example of how slavery was uneconomic, was shown during a survey done by The Measuring Worth Company. This showed that it took up to twelve years just to receive income from a slave. In the bible, the scripture says, “No man can serve two masters”(Matthew 6:24). This means that another man can not serve anyone else but god. Unfortunately, Americans violated their own bible and did this. Americans also put slaves through horrible travel, as they were thrown in steerage. This place was described by William Wilberforce as “horrible and abusive”. The conditions in steerage were terrible and smelled just like dirty livestock. As he traveled in ships, William noticed how abusive men were as they assaulted many slaves and whipped them for numerous things.
