Nicknames are born from somebody's personality. For example if your shorty a nickname you might have is shorty.Nicknames like those can be bad because they are offensive."Snoopy is stupid nickname.A mean nickname. a dog nickname!"Said Charles Ross in the book The 6th Grade Nickname Game .This nickname was given to him because he was always snooping around in people business.Although this was true this is an example
of a mean nickname. He's as cool as a loaf of bread"Said Jeff about Mike Smith. That was until they gave him the name Iceman as a joke. After the Nickname Iceman caught on because his nickname was "cool" everyone thought he was to. Eventually he was the coolest dude in school.Nicknames can also be good because if somebody is negative and if you give them a positive nickname eventually if everyone calls him that the person could actually change his additude to a positive one.Lastly nicknames are good because if a close family member has a nickname like memaw that person feels closer to you like your the only one you can call her that. These are only some of the ways nicknames can be powerful. They Change someone's personality to making someone feel safe around. They are very powerful. So next time you see somebody say a bad nickname to someone else stand up for them because now you know how that nickname could change his or her personality.

“Can you imagine what a mess a world would be without names? (website)Names are very important to a person and their individuality. Ayn Rand’s novel “Anthem” is a book in which the people written about do not have names. The importance of having your own individual names is huge. A name can have meaning given to it, like how the name Sue means lily. Most parents when giving you your name have a meaning behind it and put much thought into what their future child should be named. Names can give you a part of your identity.
In an Amazon.co.uk interview titled “Magic, Mystery and Mayhem: An Interview with J.K. Rowling,” when asked about the way she came up with the names of characters in her books, she replied, “I invented some of the names in the Harry books, but I also collect strange names. I've gotten them from medieval saints, maps, dictionaries, plants, war memorials, and people I've met!” J.K. Rowling chose these names for a reason based on the deeper meanings behind every character's name and the way they relate to their roles and personalities. In Octavia E. Butler's short story “Speech Sounds”, Rye and Obsidian were the names she chose for her characters. Rye, the name of the main protagonist which symbolizes home and earth yearns to reconnect with her family and to rebuild a family of her own while Obsidian, the supporting character, is named after a type of lava stone, which is believed to contain magical properties that “absorbs and destroys negative energy such as anger, criticism, and fear” (Zagata). The names of the characters have two purposes: to describe the character's role and personality, and to give them an identity.
This poem written by Francisco Alarcon describes the life of an illiterate man who finds himself signing away his freedom by placing his mark on a contract. He is unable to read the contract he is signing or even write his name. Being unable to read he leaves himself vulnerable to be taken advantage of and deceived. Alarcon, who was raised in a Hispanic community, was surrounded by illiteracy. Wanting to change the situation in which he was raised in he went to school to become a teacher and now focuses his efforts on eliminating illiteracy. This poem was written from the experience of watching those he cared about around him being taken advantage of because they were unable to read or write. "The X in My Name" shows the mistakes and ill consequences that illiteracy can bring upon those uneducated. It also sheds light onto how social structure and financial class play into illiteracy, and how detrimental illiteracy can be to those on the low end of the monetary spectrum. Though Alarcon only uses a few words it is easy to understand and see how the illiterate can be effortlessly be taken advantage of.
Greasers are real people just like Socs, but they do not fit in as easily. They feel as though they don’t belong anywhere. Or in other words, they are outsiders. Hence the title name. Ponyboy especially feels like this due to the fact that he does not fit in very well with Socs or Greasers. The rest of Pony’s gang feels more like the fit as Greasers. In conclusion, the title of the novel fits with the theme because they do not fit in anywhere, and they are outsiders.
Native American and settler have always been fighting over land, and the movie clip, Pocahontas explains it in a different way. They were fighting because the Native Americans captured John Smith from the settlers. This fight was stopped because Pocahontas jumped in front of the potential murder of John Smith. She did this because she loved him and also she did not want anyone to fight, she told her father about what he caused by capturing him from the settlers. Mike Gabriel inaccurately portrayed the conflict between the settlers and the Native Americans because they never fought and it was stopped by love between a Pocahontas, a Native American and John Smith, a European, Europeans and Native Americans never liked each other.
People from foreign ethnic group have names that is difficult to pronounce for native people. A typical response they get when they introduce themselves is a curious look and subsequently a question-- How do you pronounce your name again? The way a name is pronounced, it can shape how individuals see us and define our accomplishments. Both Akakiy and Gogol are born without a name. The mothers struggle to think of what to name their child. Later, they are both given a name essentially from their fathers. In “The Overcoat,” Akakiy’s mother decides to name Akakiy after his father. When she decides this she says that “[h]is father’s name was Akakiy, so let his son’s be Akakiy too” (The Overcoat, 2). In The Namesake, Gogol’s father, Ashoke, thinks of a name. “With a slight quiver of recognition, as i...
The Voice, 'Ol' Blue Eyes', Swoonatra, La Voz, and Chairman of the Board. These were all sobriquets of the infamous Frank Sinatra. However, one of Sinatra's earliest and possibly most well-known nicknames was The Voice. A title such as The Voice is more than just a name that sounds cool and sensual. It promises something flawless about his singing style, signifying you could select one song, or perhaps even an album, as representative of Frank Sinatra.
Catchphrases change within the English languages just like the tide. One day people may be saying “biting off more than you can chew” (Lasiter) to saying “up shit creek without a paddle” (Martin) the next; both meaning something along the lines of being in an unpleasant predicament. When using a catchphrase one can get across their meaning in a more colorful and youthful manner than just saying “you’re in an unpleasant predicament at the moment.” Another example would be, “looney toons,” (Lasiter) “fruity as a fruit cake,” (Lasiter) and “bats in the belfry” (Martin) all meaning crazy or eccentric. Some of these catchphrases are just passing fades and others timeless and can go on for centuries more. Our catchphrases are influenced by the culture and technology around us; such as “looney toons,” derived from the T.V show, Looney Toons, created by the Warner Brothers Studios. If the television was never developed the Looney Toons characters may have never been created; thus, the phrase “looney toons” would have never been thought of. Formality can have an impact on whether or not a catchphrase is used in conversation.
The title The Namesake mirrors the struggle of Gogol Ganguli, child of Ashoke and Ashima, Indian foreigners to the U.S.A. to get personality in the way of life where he is conceived and raised with his strange name. Names do make them mean in India. A considerable measure of practice is done when a youngster is named in India. An Indian tyke for the most part conveys two names, a pet name and an official one. Pet names are for the family and neighbours and colleagues. They convey or may not convey meaning. In any case, official names are kept with a great deal of care and practice.

Over the years, people have wondered what goes on in a person's mind that guides them to meet their needs. Sigmund Freud developed a system of personality that boldly attempts to explain the course of personality and what was it origins. Freud theory assumes that one's personality is shaped and some powerful inner forces motivate one's behavior. According to Freud, personality differences commence from the different ways in which people deal with their underlying drives. By picturing a continuing battle between antagonistic parts of personality, Freud was able to develop three systems that make up the total personality. The three systems of personality are the id, ego, and the superego. If the three systems work together in harmony and unite together to form one complete organization, it enables one to create a positive transaction with the environment. If the systems are fighting with each other, one is said to be dissatisfied with himself or the world. By examining the ego, the id, and the superego, one should see how these three systems of personality play an important role in the development of one's personality. In doing so one should understand what conscious and unconscious, and the functions of the id, ego, and superego.
