Why Is Hrothgar Important In Beowulf

In the poem of Beowulf, King Hrothgar would have to be my favorite character next to Beowulf. Most readers focus on Beowulf due to him being the heroic leader in the poem; however, the main focus would have to include Hrothgar. Hrothgar fought in his early ages as Beowulf was doing in his, so not only should we emulate Beowulf, but also we should emulate King Hrothgar.
Hrothgar is a legendary Danish king as well as being a king to the Spear-Danes. Hrothgar also knew Beowulf’s father, and that’s what makes King Hrothgar interesting. Beowulf feels like he has loyalty towards Hrothgar as well as looking up to him as a father. This loyalty was earned due to Hrothgar paying money to the Wulfings to help fix the blood feud they had with Beowulf’s father. Something of interest about Hrothgar is that he didn’t have the strength to face Grendel, but he still managed to keep his people safe. Hrothgar kept his people safe by escaping Herot Hall (a beautiful and joyful place in his kingdom) to avoid Grendel’s attacks. So when Hrothgar met Beowulf, he was told that Beowulf would defeat Grendel in his honor of doing so. Hrothgar then kindly rewards Beowulf for killing Grendel, which makes me satisfied, only because Hrothgar takes his time out of his day to be so compassionate towards Beowulf as well as …show more content…

Hrothgar reminds me so much of my dad, especially because my dad is in the Navy and Hrothgar relates to him due to them sacrificing everything for everyone . Hrothgar went through so many challenges to get where he was, including him facing Grendel. My father had to face so many challenges in the Navy, just as Hrothgar had to do in his early ages. My father described the Navy “as the worst hell”, but he still managed to face his fears and own up to what he had to. Just like Hrothgar would have.
