Why Is Hazing Wrong

College is a lively time to be in. We get some distance from our parents, and the freedom of being an adult. College is a place where people can be themselves. At least this is all advised when high schoolers go to college. It is when we step foot on campus as a freshman in college where we see that we cannot be ourselves. Halls of knowledge have deep dark secrets. They tend to take the core of a person and change them into loyal brothers and sisters of their organization(s). By doing so they go through these “rituals”. It’s only once the ritual turn into oppressing and hateful actions that it is called hazing. Hazing is very well known through all universities. It makes people feel like they are humiliated and hurt. Most people do not know what to do when it happens. Colleges should make the rituals/ traditions performed in the organizations have more discipline, equality, and freedom when it comes to the traditions of hazing within universities.
Hazing is a resilient part of about being in college. People hazing to dishearten the diversity among people. Some frats and

sororities houses are based upon the personality of each of its members. For example, at The University of Alabama (UA), the African American fraternities are a part of this. We have The Ques, The Alpha’s, The Kappa’s, and The Sigma’s. each of these frats have their own personality that is shared among the brothers. The Ques are the “dogs” they tend to be more like play boys. The Alpha’s however, are sweet and perfect gentlemen. If one of the members goes against their beliefs it is believed that they will be hazed into thinking otherwise.
Other versions of diversity that is squeezed out of the organizations include race, especially in the south. This way each of the organizations have a sense of a place in their right groups. Black students do not feel as though as the white students give them much of a say. Also, at UA white student leaders feel the need to make a committee that makes sure the non-marginalize students do not have a say in the matter that matter most at UA’s school. For example, is our Student President for the 2017 UA office and how he got elected. A committee made sure that the students that are under the influence made them vote for the Student President. There are many factors of Diversity and many way of how people think and feel about it. The way the people feel is mainly toward the more prejudice way of thinking. It is how it is played is the problem of our schools. The way it is played can be perceived as discrimination and harassment.
Harassment is not a victimless crime that can be just shrugged off.

The victim involved in the act can sometimes feel like they are terrorized and feel they need a compensation for their distress. Then the law in charge, the criminal charges for harassment in the state of Alabama is a “Class C Misdemeanor. (Section 13A-11-8)” Which means that the punishment towards the perpetrator can be a small fine, or if serious, less than a year of jail time. Depending on the situation at hand. There should be more of a punishment on the perpetrator. Harassment is a continuous violation that happens more than once for every campus. At time, it ends with a serious ending on the victim. Dealing with people’s lives should not be taken easily. However, there are people in the world who are open to take full advantage of a vulnerable moment and take over. That is why hazing should have a consequence to its

actions.
When thinking about equality in 2017, it is a big issue that is not being helped by our government. Being equal is a symbol in our society of being treated with respect. Not to be treated by what we are born with. Hazing occurs more frequently when it comes to the equality. Hazing is the equivalency of being maltreated by groups, people, or person. There are different forms of this. You can harass a person by their ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, age, social economic status, and more. Race is the most used when focus on the prejudice/ discrimination of the different parties at the institution. For example, there is a girl in the south who is African American. She rushed a Caucasian sorority. She got a ton of backlash about how she should not be attending the school in general because of her skin color. “Black women going through recruitment... ( Sade Strehlke)” an older gentleman continues to say to the thread on a discussion board. “This is the south (hence SOUTHERN Methodist University). ( Sade Strehlke)” People feel they are entitled to a say to where this girl has to go to school and rush. Little do they know that many of the Minority groups are less likely to be hired by companies. They tend to have in their groups, ow GPA, bad grades, not involved on campus, know nothing about the houses) and are heavily unprepared (no letters of recommendations or letters of support) and generally come from a completely different background (impoverished lower class). (Sade Strehlke)” People through the left overs of the people who can barely make it into those groups. When applying to go to a white sorority it was a decision for her future.
Traditions are held by families, organizations, and many relationships among people. Traditions at times keep people connected on a certain level. Hazing is how certain organizations keep their patrons loyal to their cause and show respect to those who came before them. Traditions are honored and longtime established. To keep tradition, it sometimes makes sure that nothing new (AKA scary) come in-between the brothers and sisters of the organization.
Either being tradion or a ritual. There should not be a form of harassment/discrimination upon anybody. Mom’s in America have a golden rule that could be applied to this, “treat others how you want to be treated.” It could be a guideline of how anybody lives their life. Keeping it that simple and understand that everyone is different. Especially in college, to be scared for life after a time that is supposed to be fun is harmful. Colleges should make the rituals/ traditions performed in the organizations have more discipline, equality, and freedom when it comes to the traditions of hazing within universities. When having equality there is no reason to haze the different, freedom allows the students to say no to certain task when participating in the traditions, and discipline helps with the traditions not getting to out of hand. If we apply those rules/ guidelines universities will have less problems overall. Hazing is not a supposed to be a college experience.
