Is death a bad? I agree with Thomas Nagel. He writes, “If, as many people believe, death is the unequivocal and permanent end of our existence, the question arises whether it is a bad thing to die. There is conspicuous disagreement about the matter: some people think death is dreadful; others have no objection to death per se though they may hope their own will be neither premature nor painful.” (73) I have asked myself this question more than a dozen times. I say it depends on the individual and the situation whether death is bad. Every breath we take brings us closer to death. I believe that not knowing when, where, or how you will die is what makes death bad.
Death according to Merriam-Webster is the end of life. It is natural and part of a life cycle. Everything that lives eventually dies. A permanent end of our existence, as Nagel puts it. For me, death is bad when someone takes his own life or dies unexpectedly for the people left behind that mourn the loss of the deceased. However, I think for someone with a terminal illness, who suffers a great deal of pain, we pray for death so that the person can be at peace. Death cannot come soon enough. …show more content…

An evil as some may think, “That brings to an end all the goods that life contains.” (74) Suicide rates are huge amount teenagers and senior citizens. For both situations, I can only speculate that there is a loneliness that overcomes them. For teenagers drugs and alcohol may be part of the picture. When chemical dependence takes them to a dark place and no matter what interventions is pursued, it has no effect. For senior citizens, I feel there is a sense of loneliness. People they know are dying or have passed. They tend to remain homebound, with very little socialization. They rise early in the morning and go to sleep early in the evening.
