As human beings, everyone goes through teenage years and puberty. While some have the future figured out, others do not even know what they want. Some people see Holden as an insane juvenile living in a sane world. There are times in life in which some human beings have thought to themselves what the real meaning of life is. Some of those people have jumped to conclusions and some just live their life forgetting that they have asked themselves that question. Caulfield asks a literal question several times in this book, the question consists of “Well, you know the ducks that swim around in it? In the springtime and all? Do you happen to know where they go in the wintertime, by any chance?” The question itself represents a way of curiosity of life in Holden’s mind and eyes. The ducks are a symbol of human beings.
