Bottled water verses tap water. 9/21/2016 Why is bottled water so popular? The United States is the second largest bottled water producer in the world right after China. Bottled water is expected to overtake soda as the number one packaged beverage by next year. Companies like Nestle and Coke are betting big on the future of bottled water. they spend fortunes on advertising to convince Americans that bottled water is the drink of choice for the sophisticated and the health conscious. Bottled water costs more to. Americans are paying an average of $1.22 per gallon. That is about 300 times the cost of tap water. Oil cost 1.39 per gallon as of May 2015.That makes bottled water on average more expensive then oil. Here are a few reasons the cost of bottled water is so high. The price of water by its self, the bottle it comes in, the cost of transporting, and the costs of advertising. We can avoid these unnecessary costs by using tap water. Let us not forget the effects on the environment. Less than one third of these bottles will be Recycled in the United States. Most bottles end up in landfills or floating in our oceans. All of that Water has to come from somewhere. Our ground water is being over used so that this water can Be bottled and sold. The oil used to produce and transport bottled water means large amounts of Co2 being pumped into the atmosphere. If we want to secure a pollutant free environment for children, we have to make big changes starting with making use of tap water. Bottled water has its advantages. This would show how bottled water is being falsely advertised and is actually harmful for the body since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “doesn’t keep track of companies that produce bottled water and doesn’t require [them] to report positive tests for contaminants” (Zhang, 2009, para. 1). The FDA, which is the only organization that regulates the bottle water should put in effect stronger regulations in order to have more control over the water that is being sold to people.

Both passages expose the bottling companies’ manipulative tricks, in order to bring awareness and open the populations’ eyes to the lies they have been fed for many years, however the authors utilize distinct styles to achieve their goal. In “Business in a Bottle”, Barnett explains how the bottled water industry started, how the industry is struggling with the law regarding drawing its water from natural resources, and how it uses its marketing to imply the false location on where they got the water (128-138). Barnett then concludes that the bottled water industry helps economy with the job opportunities they provided and that consumers do not really care about the content of their bottled water because all they care about are the “convenience, the packaging, and the price” (141). Conversations often turn into arguments when the topic of bottled water versus tap water comes up. Many say that tap water is simply unsafe while others argue that the chemicals in the plastic bottles release toxic or harmful substances into our bodies as well as the environment. However, some humans consume water from public water systems, personal wells, or even bottled water; whichever is most convenient for each particular lifestyle. Nestlé Company based in Switzerland is the largest food company in the world and makes 1.8 million USD per day just from selling bottled water, non sparkling bottled water being its most profitable commodity. Nestlé has plants of bottled water across the United States and around the world. Nestlé controls one-third of the US market and sells water under 70 different brands across the world. Some popular ones are- Deer Park, Nestlé Pure Life, Ozarka, Ice Mountain and Poland Spring.
For every water bottle made, non-renewable resources are wasted to produce an unnecessary luxury. For the bottled water that Americans enjoy, seventeen million barrels of oil are used (excluding transportation), which could fuel more than 1.3 million cars for a year. Most water is imported and exported from places that are thousands of miles away, such as Fiji. Although oil is controversial in nature, for every one liter of water produced, three liters are used. The excess water wasted can supply clean water to the world’s poorest countries.
In short, the industry extremely focused on preventing and testing the presence of bacteria. Therefore, bottled water often represented “somewhat of a novelty or prestige product” in the United States, and it gave a perception to their consumers that they need to purchase bottled water in order to stay young and healthy. Because the bottled water industry seemed very attractive and profitable, as mentioned above, there were many competitors, too. Total nine bottled water producers were mentioned in the case study, but four key major rivals were Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle, and Groupe Danone. However, there was no one buyer that accounts for a significant fraction of overall market demand. Distribution varied depending on the producer, but most distribution channels included food stores, supercenters, supermarkets, discount stores, and wholesale clubs. Most of that water is packaged in plastic bottles.The EPA estimates that plastics such as those used to make water bottles make up nearly 13 percent of our trash. An industry watchdog group reports that it takes nearly eighteen million barrels of oil to make the amount of plastic needed to meet Americans'thirst for bottled water. That's about the same amount of oil that a million vehicles use in one year. Oil is a nonrenewable resource—once it's gone, it's gone. Worse yet, the vehicles used to move bottled water from place to place release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Perhaps more alarming is that people recycle fewer than 20 percent of their empty bottles. Most emptybottles are tossed in the trash. From there, they end up in a landfill, where they cause further environmental damage.
From a business point of view, it seems so ignorantly deceptive, yet it is absolutely genius. With a little marketing, bottled water has become a huge success. However, it is killing the environment and the water is usually comparable to tap water regardless. Clean and safe drinking water resources are becoming scarce as the population grows. The world is facing many problems, but the most important thing needed to survive, is water. Water is getting low in many countries, therefore residents are suffering the misfortune of not having the reliable source of clean water. Today many countries are having water shortages meaning rivers, lakes, streams and groundwater are not enough to rely on for supplying water demands. For example, California is facing a drastic water shortage, the natural water resources are not enough to fulfill their water demands.
