Athena is one of the 12 important Olympian gods. She was the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and arts and crafts. Not only was she goddess of arts and craft but she was goddess of magic. Athena was famous because she was viewed as the protector of Greek cities. The Greek cities worshipped her because Athena and Apollo were among the most choices of patron gods. She was often depicted wearing a helmet and carrying the aegis. There was a temple called Parthenon that was dedicated to Athena. Athena was full grown out of Zeus head after he swallowed his first wife Metis who is Athena mother. Zeus swallowed his first wife before she gave birth because he was afraid that his kids would overpower him. Through all of Athena childhood The myth was important because it’s what happened to her and what she really is. Athena myth was that she was sprang full grown and clad in armor from Zeus’s forehead. Her birth was a unique thing that happened to Athena. Zeus swallowed his first wife Metis who is Athena mom before she could give birth to Athena. Mythology is critical to Greek people’s everyday life, just like how religion is in our modern day age. Everyday events, such as a thunderstorm, can be linked to a god or goddess. For example, when an earthquake would happen, it would be Poseidon crashing his tritan on the ground. People’s lives revolved around the whole ideology and it served as a way to explain the unexplained and to help them in times of need. All of the stories of these great gods and goddesses were passed down generation through generation, each time becoming more extreme and distorted.
Character of Athena in Homer's Odyssey Imagine living in another world and time, one where you were not only a god but could also take the form of any object or person that you chose. Athena, the daughter of Zeus, has this ability. Of all the characters in the Odyssey, the most interesting to me is Athena. In my opinion, she guides the main characters of the Odyssey in the right direction. She kind of looks over their shoulders and serves as a guardian angel. Athena makes Telemachos go to Pylos and Sparta. Athena says, "My advice to you is this, if you will let me advise you. Get the best
As a resident on Mount Olympus, Athena rightfully represents both intelligence and strategy (Grant, Hazel 83). Symbols that identify with the goddess include the owl for wisdom and the olive branch for peace (Athena or Minerva… 1). Athena was a goddess of war who preferred peace to fighting (Lies 47). The deity was depicted in full wartime armor, including a helmet and spear. However, despite her rough accessories, Athena also showed off extreme femininity in her clothing as well as features (Buxton 79). Athena was Zeus’s favorite daughter. Zeus, the king of the gods, allowed her to dress in his Aegis (Lies 47). The Aegis was a breastplate made of goatskin that bore the image of a gorgon to instill panic in foes (Buxton 79). She was born fully-grown and already dressed in her full outfit, ready for war. Furthermore, Athena was the only Olympian not born of a mother. She sprang directly from her father, Zeus’s, head (Lies 47). She was different from the others of her kind, which may be why she was so honored so highly in early Greece.
Circe and Calypso were mentioned prior but, a few other goddesses I find important are Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena. Hera’s role involves carrying out her duties as a wife to Zeus, at times though, Hera stands up for what she thinks is right regardless of her husband’s opinion. In book 14 of The Iliad, Hera’s mischievous side comes out when she uses magic to trick both Aphrodite and Zeus in order to help the Achaeans behind her husband’s back. This implies that Hera is a bit of a nuisance to Zeus and her loyalty teeters at times making her untrustworthy. As for Aphrodite, her roles in both of the epics involved some kind of unfaithfulness whether on her part or on another’s.
The Greeks believed the deities provided the city protection and allowed them to be successful in their endeavors while in time of war. Phidias, a master bronze worker, was commissioned to create the sculpture of Athena Parthenos, the goddess of wisdom to show tribute to the gods by creating a large scale sculpture in Acropolis. The Acropolis was the most important site in the city of Athens, and was well recognized as the hilltop of protection. It is also the most significant reference point of ancient Greek culture as well as the symbol of the city of Athens. Some of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the period were erected on its ground.
Mythology was very important to the men and women of ancient Greece. They worshipped the gods and goddesses, wrote poems about them, and based a great deal of art work off of them. The people of Greece looked to the gods and goddesses for help in all aspects of their lives; including health, agriculture, and war. Reading about Greek mythology can inform people about the society of Greece because the Greek gods were created by the people of Greece. Three main goddesses who were worshipped by the Greeks were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
What makes the depiction between Athena and Aphrodite interesting is the different ways they are portrayed even sharing the similarity of being born strictly from male only. Athena from the all-powerful king of the gods Zeus and Aphrodite from Ouronos. Though they were both born from man alone, the content of these births caused Athena to be expressed in a more dignified, respected, and superior way. Hesiod’s recount of the births of Athena and Aphrodite in his Theogony reveals the source of Athena’s superiority. According to the Theogony, Ouranos’ genitals are thrown into the sea where they mix with the sea foam to result in Aphrodite (Hesiod 180-192). Aphrodite is said to be called, by Hesiod, “Philommedes, fond of a man’s genitals” ( Hesiod, 200-201). In contrast, Hesiod writes that Athena is born from Zeus’ head (Hesiod 924) after Zeus consumes her mother Metis, the goddess whose name means wisdom, for fear of her giving birth to someone who was destined to be his match in wisdom (Hesiod 894-900).
The goddesses Played a vital role in Greek society for they were responsible for many aspects of Greek. life, i.e., a life of a child. birth, harvest, etc. Accompanying the 6 major goddesses (Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Hestia, Demeter and Artemis) we have the lesser divinities such as the Muses, the Graces, the Fates, etc. The second level of women used in Greek mythology is that of the human.

The Greek goddess Athena is usually portrayed as one of the strongest gods in Olympia. As Greek civilization shapes gods that represent their desired identity, representing the god of war and the immortal spirit of wisdom, Athena is the goddess of the balance between intelligence and power. Through Athena's existence, she embodies victory and judgment, while her influences on other gods and mortals demonstrate the power of intellect and civilization. By fusing characteristics of multiple gods to one body, Athena embodies the characteristics of Greek civilization, which are wisdom, power and justice.
In this passage, Athena appears on top of the temple to address Ion and his mother after Ion’s identity as son of Creusa and Apollo has just been revealed by the discovery of the cradle in which Creusa exposed Ion as a child. Ion is still skeptical about his paternity and thus Athena arrives as a favor to Apollo to clarify the story of Ion’s birth. This paper will discuss the implications of Athena’s presence and Apollo’s absence and how this moment refocuses and brings new meaning to the play.
Athena's function is to be a goddess of pro-Greek warfare. She came to the aid
