Education and Training:
High school students should take advanced placement courses in biology, chemistry, calculus, and physics
Posses a high school diploma
A doctoral degree in biochemistry is preferred (a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry is applicable as well)
A Ph.D. is generally required for most independent research positions and teaching positions at the college level
Have taken courses and/or majored in some of the following organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biostatistics, cell and molecular biology
Will want to have prior knowledge in biochemistry lab courses, the techniques in biochemistry, and the basic foundations in biomedical science modules
Have excellent verbal communication and writing skills\

Job-related training can include: training in safety, lab equipment, professional conduct, policy, handling evidence, and correctly analyzing and submitting evidence
Job shadow and assist experienced biochemists in some of the following: performing tests, analyzing molecules, writing reports, determining the structure of molecules through an electron microscope, and developing regulations while creating products
Job shadowing can last anywhere from a couple of months to a little over a year for 2-4 hours a day, four to five days a week

Responsibilities and Daily Activities:
A normal day includes: setting up the lab, physically drawing samples via the aseptic technique, preparing samples, analyzing samples for metabolites, turbidity, cell count and viability, interpreting the findings, communicate the findings both orally and in well-written technical reports, and cleaning up the lab
Plan and conduct experiments
Isolate, analyze, and synthesize proteins, enzymes, DNA, and other molecules
Analyze products and develop new products
Presenting their findings to peers and creating grant proposals to acquire funding
Develop new analytical methods with the support of senior staff

I think it would be very interesting to study the chemical relationship between the human body and the environment. I also would get a lot of hands-on experience, which I love because I learn best when I get to interact with the activity. I am a very thorough person and I know that when analyzing and writing reports, being detailed is a very important skill to obtain. The only problem with this career is that there isn’t a set schedule, therefore free time isn’t common. I enjoy having a set schedule because I like to stay organized and plan my free time accordingly. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate this career choice an 8 because although I love the tasks within the career, I’m worried that I won’t get a lot of time to
