Theatre has been a gigantic part of my extracurricular life. Over the past ten years, I have been in over 15 productions with Western Alamance High Theatre and local community theaters, such as Alamance Children's Theatre, or Studio One, both located in Burlington, North Carolina. Not only have I worked in the acting side of theatre, but I have also stage managed and done tech work for over seven shows. Whether it is making costumes, building sets, or creating light and sound cues, I am always diligent and effective with whatever task I am faced with. My hope is to continue theatre after I graduate high school. People have dreams of what they want to do or accomplish in life, but usually musical theatre is just pushed into the non-realistic void. It isn’t a dream for me. In the past four years, musical theatre has been clarified as my reality. Musical theatre has been the only thing I have seen myself wanting to do. My first love was The Phantom of the Opera, seeing how I watched it almost every day and it was one of the first shows I saw. The career that I chose was Performing Arts, more specifically, Musical Theatre. I would perform as a singer, dancer as well as an actress, gaining the title of a performer. My career in a small view is performing different plays and musicals for people and making everyone happy. I chose this career, because I love performing and I’ve always done some form of it through elementary school until now. I had always enjoyed singing and playing music, but when I performed in front of the student body in Play Production II, everything changed. The most important reason I want to go to boarding school is for the arts. Don’t get me wrong; I love my school. It is an arts magnet school, of course, and does have a partial emphasis on them, but I want to go somewhere where the whole school is focused on what I love to do most: perform. At GCHS, 70% of the students I’ve met only care about sports. It’s difficult to feel passionate about something you love when everyone just shoots it down for ‘important’ things. Of course, the administration aren’t like that, but the students are, and it’s a bit disconcerting. It’s not that I can’t get past that: of course I can. But I love theatre. It’s pretty much my life, and at the boarding school I wish to go to the most—Walnut Hill School for the Arts—it’s the life of ¼ of the students there. (The ones who don’t focus on music, visual art, or dance.) The school has, well, school, but it’s all about making you a better performer, actor, and singer. According to their website, theatre-centered students take 3 hours of acting, 3 hours of musical theatre, 2.5 hours of ‘movement for the actors’ (Also known as dance involved in musicals.), and 3 hours of production & design—a week.1 Walnut Hill’s expansive list of teachers are experts at musicals, plays, and shaping great actors, and most of their students are there because they love their craft, not because their parents—or the law—is forcing them to be, so it would probably be easier for me to focus on honing my talent rather than worrying about whether or not the other...
During my sophomore year I was asked to be part of the first ever Improv Troupe in Little Falls and am now the current Vice President.. We attended a week long camp that trained us to present messages using theater, to the community.
I started this hobby in 6th grade as an effort to put myself out there. Overall, I have participated in only three official plays. Sadly, this year, I suffered from a busy schedule and had to refrain from participating in this year’s school play. This hobby is important to me because it exposed me to many great works of theater and literature. More importantly, this gave me a voice, which helps me with public speaking majorly. However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of how theater is more than a mere performance, but rather an artform with nuance and depth. My knowledge on theatrical styles has expanded and some of my favorites we have studied in class are Brechtian and Chinese theatre styles. I grew up participating in musical theatre, but never had the opportunity to truly learn the history and details of the craft. During orientation for my freshman year at BRMHS, I signed up for piano classes. When I was given my schedule, Piano I was not listed. Instead, I had been enrolled in a media arts course due to the piano classes filling up too quickly. I thought I would hate the class because of my lack of interest in film, television, and broadcast journalism. After my first few weeks in the class, I was hooked. Now, I have been taking media arts courses for over three years. Because of my experience in film and television production, my love for art and creativity, and the joy obtained from entertaining other people, I want to be a film director. While majoring in theater at LSU with a film and television concentration, I will gain valuable skills necessary to create major shows and films, and I will learn to write interesting material in order to entertain others.

This past summer, I attended Interlochen Arts Camp as a Shakespeare Theatre Production Major. Wishing to further hone the knowledge I had gained during my previous summer at IAC, I auditioned for Advanced Acting Studio, and was accepted.
My journey into theatre was like Alice’s falling down the rabbit hole, slowly but sudden. It started with my attraction to visual storytelling; when reading, words peeled off the page and became images, transforming words into reality. This is not unlike a designer’s job in theatre -- turning plays into tangible worlds, even when they take place in a distant galaxy or down a rabbit hole. Upon visiting New York University’s design department, I paid close attention to the students’ work, I was impressed by the extreme attention to even the most minute details. Not only the work itself, but the resources, the ability to collaborate and learn from working professionals in the design field. It was a dream.
Becoming interested in theatre design was almost instantaneous for me. I am fascinated with how an entire world can be conveyed through the sets I design and want to share my visions with the world. I enjoy the entire process of design, from the research to the actual creation of the sets. I get to immerse myself into the story and the world surrounding it, something I also do when I read books, which is another reason I became interested in theatre design. When I read, I imagine the setting the characters are in and I realized upon becoming a scenic artist that I can share my ideas with others.

Many people think theatre is all just cheesy singing and dancing or just boring old Shakespeare, but there is much more to theatre than those two extremes. Theatre is important to our society because it teaches us more about real life than recorded media. The aims and intentions of this essay is to discuss and evaluate the ways of how social change exists in applied theatre in non-traditional settings, as well as the educational, social and therapeutic mission of this change. We will do this discussion by under-taking an evaluation of theatre companies such as Crag Rats and organizations which work under Open Clasp theatre, Forum and Reminiscence theatre.
